AVOC, WEDNESDAY, GENERAL MOTOR PROFITS REDUCED $22,000,000 Drop in Quar- ter’s Net Seen—Advance in Prices Weighed. By the Assoclated Press. NEW YORK, July 28.—A $22,000,- 000 drop in General Motors Corp.'s net earnings during the June quarter was ascribed in part to labor troubles today by Chairman Alfred P. Sloan, jr. Sloan indicated price increases were being considered because of risinj costs. In a letter to stockhol@ers, Sloan said the corporation had been unable to produce enough automobiles to meet consumer demands during the first six months of 1937 largely because of “wildcat strikes.” He said there had been “only 10 working days” from February 11, when the general strike was settled, to July 1, without “interruptions of some form or other.” “And all this notwithstanding the fact that the contract entered into with the United Automobile Workers of America specifically set forth that there would be no interruptions,” Sloan continued. “It is perfectly evident that what | has happened was occasioned through inability on the part of the union leadership to control their own fol- lowers.” Sloan reported the corporation’s net | earnings for the June quarter were | $65,731,000, or $148 a common share, compared with $88.108372, or $2 at share, in the June quarter last year. Net earnings for the six months were $110.545,266, equal to $2.47 a common share, against $140.572,546, or $3.17 a share, in the first six months of 1936. Forecasting a rise in the price of automobiles, Sloan said increases in the cost of labor and materials must of necessity be reflected “in the form of a substantial increase” in selling “Just how much this must be” he added, “it is impossible to state at| available.” Washington Produce prints. 38; a0 score !s-pound prints. 38 22: calves, 1 Fall lamb 3. frozen pors fresh hams 19 smoked hams, siab bacon, 0. compoy 24 tresi shiced d. 13 igs, 103,a11: light hogs 113.a12: 220-250 heavies 107al03, Caives, a0 net £ o b Wash- of ally steady graded and dated large. 40, U. € S, standard LIVE “POULT Prices heavy 19820 Toosters. NEW YORK, July 28—Activity in farm equipment industries, coincident | with abundant crops and high pm‘ea.} is the outstanding bright spot in the steel industry at the moment, Iron Age said today in its weekly review. “Not only is business from Amer- ican farms far above the average, the trade journal said, “but there is also good demand from abroad for farm machinery, especially tractor- drawn. There is a broad reflection of the farm situation in tin plate and cans.” The review said “spotty” improve- ment in general business had been sufficient to convince the tradg that the bottom of the Midsummer reces- sion had been reached, although there has been no pronounced reversal of | the recent downward trend of new business, except at Chicago, where the favorable farm outlook was more in | evidence than in areas farther West. | “Steel production is in a contra-sea- | sonal advance,” the publication stated “although there may be downward adjustments before the Fall buying movement gets into full swing. Pro- duction for the week is estimated at 85 per cent of capacity. “The automobile industry is not yet buying heavily for 1938 models, but | additional steel business from that | source is expected within a few weeks. | In general, the demand for steel other than that covered by contract commitments, is light, but not un- usually s0 for this time of the year. “Fabricated structural steel lettings, | in small volume for some weeks, have | risen this week to more than 22,000 tons.” The review noted scrap steel prices have advanced sharply without bene- fit of much buying by mills. The Iron | Age composite advanced to $20.08 a ton, or $3 above the low point of the | vear and $1.84 under the 1937 peak | reached late in June. CHICAGO LIVE STOCK.
