.S WTNESS HT IN IO TRAL Defense Hammers at Story of Meeting to Plan 0’Con- nell Abduction. By the Assoclated Press. BINGHAMTON, N. Y, July 28.— ‘The defense hammered today at the story of a Government witness that three of eight men on trial for the 1933 kidnaping of John J. Connell, Jr. attended New York City meetings ealled to plan the abduction. A Government witness, Ignatius J. Gannon, New York City detective, con- tradicted defense testimony previously given by Tony Reino—Clinton Prison | convict—and was subjected to severe eross-examination. He identified Manning Strewl, John Oley and Percy Geary, three defend- ants, as among those he saw enter the New York City home of Sol Shep- nick, where, the Government contends, O'Connell's abduction was plotted, “three or four times in February, 1933." Gannon quoted Reino, from a con- versation he said took place in Tombs Winning THE EVENING Contract manner as to induce the op- ponents to make a mistake is the outstanding characteristic of Ray- mond Balfe’s dummy play. contract of three no-trump, many players would have been defeated on the hand below. Mr. Balfe’s trap pass after East's opening diamond bid was in the ap- proved modern manner. He hoped to inflict a substantial penalty. When West's one no-trump response Was passed around to him, Mr. Balfe doubled, whereupon West quickly res- cued himself at two diamonds. Then, when North made a free bid of two spades, Mr. Balfe made a good gam- bling bid of three no-trump and se- cured the contract. But if one of his opponents held a club stopper, Mr. Balfe could make but eight tricks if he immediately went after establishing that suit. There was a better and more deceptive style of play. Mr. Balfe played a small heart and ducked in dummy, and East, after winning the trick, returned another diamon. Declarer then ran off three heart tricks which forced West to make two discards.
