VOU / Nature’s Children BY LILLIAN COX ATHEY. NORTHERN PHALAROPE (Lobipes lobatus). WHEN a man bites a dog, it's news. When the female bird is larger, more beautiful and given to taking over the privileges and pleasures of the male . .. that is news, too. This is what we find in the phalarope tribe. The small swimming birds, five to nine inches long, are birds of the \ northern hemispifgre. All three of them—the red, northern and Wilson's are found in North America. Wilson’s is the only one that is a permanent resident of our continent. All members of this interesting group have very thick, ducklike plum- age, which is so waterproof that the swimmers can stay for some time in the freezing waters without any dis- comfort whatever. ‘The toes are provided with marginal webs. The long, slender legs look almost like stilts. The long, fat wings are pointed, the outer prima: being the longest and the inner sece ondaries r‘.he lengthened. This " £ 5 " B " gives the wing a V-shaped appearance, when the bird is seen in flight. The northern phalarope, sometimes called the sea or mackeral goose or sand snipg, is & beautiful ashy-gray above; thy throat and lower side of the head white, with a rich splash of tan on the upper breast, and & broad, V-shaped stripe of golden brown on the back. The very long, efficient bill is black, the eyes a deep brown and the legs and feet bluish gray. When upon the water, these charm- ing little birds float about as light as feathers. They have a game among themselves like spinning a top. They g0 so fast in this game that they cause tiny whirlpools to form. This has the effect of causing the small marine life upon which the phalarope feeds tg come to the surface or to be drawn into the swirling rings of water. If you see these birds out on the Atlantic Ocean, they are bobbing up and down like corks, having a grand time being rocked back and forth. ‘They are beautiful and gentle. The female does all the courting, and she is most ardent in her attentions directed to the modest, shy male. After she has convinced him she is the proper mother for his children, and has him completely under her magnetic personality, she suggests firmly but insistently he must get the nursery ready for the coming family. He does not seem to consider it a burden to do s0. Finding a hollow in the ground, he lines it pain- stakingly with grass and leaves. Upon its completion, his gay, duty-side- stepping spouse lays four greenish or buffy eggs, thickly spotted with several shades of brown, in the cradle. ‘Then she joins her friends, and off they go to enjoy themselves. Friend husband sits quietly at home on the eggs. Nothing is heard in the way of protests or objections raised by the husband, when he is unmolested. (Coprright, 1937.)
