By the Assoctated Press. NEW YORK, July 9.—Most divisions of retail trade hit a faster pace this week, Dun & Bradstreet reported to- day. Hot weather needs &nd the attrac- tion of price inducements helped spur sales, the survey sald. “Trade shows ushered in the Fall wholesale season, with buyers en- couraged to more liberal commitments by returns of early crop marketings,” it added. Stressing the retail turnover of sea- sonal goods, the review said, “none of the leading centers of distribution falled to surpass their totals of the week preceding. As the buying pace at some of these was the most ac- celerated since early Spring, the in- crease varied from 3 to 8 per cent. “Spending of the soldiers’ bonus money at this time last year, however, prevented the rise in the estimated volume of retail distribution over the corresponding 1936 week from exceed- ing 12 to 22 per cent. “Buoyed by well-attended trade shows in several principal markets, most branches of the wholesale trade shifted to higher gear this week. “Official opening of Fall lines of women’s suits and coats, hosiery, fur- niture, rugs, and homewares provided the propellant that spread activity to other divisions. “With current expansion of con- sumer purchases dispelling anxiety re- garding season-end carry-overs, some retailers have set Fall budgets up 10 to 15 per cent from last year’s. “At most of the leading shoe manu- facturing centers operations increased. Still struggling with heavy backlogs, bardware plants in some sections were hampered by shortage of skilled ‘labcr. Strongest demand for lumber was from the furniture industry. DETROIT, July 9.—Ward's Auto- motive Reports, Inc., estimated today that the week's output of motor cars and trucks in the United States and Canada would total 100,031 units, compared with 122,890 last week and 100,648 in the comparable week of | 1996. COLUMBIA BUILDING ASSOCIATION Opposite Palais Royal 716 11th Street WE believe these facts will readily indi- cate why the interest which a bank charges on loans must be at a higher rate than that which the same bank can pay on sav- ings or time deposits:— 1. A considerable proportion of a bank's resources, at any given time, are uninvested; they must be available to meet the possible demands of 2. Alarge ion are invested in government bonds, m extremely moderate return. 3. Operating expenses—including rent, salaries, equipment, taxes, and occasional losses —must be covered largely by earnings from loans and $nuestments . . . to say nothing of a moderate veturn to the bank’s stockholders on their in- wvested capital. The difference in rate paid on money de- ited and money loaned is analogous to the fi.fiennu in wholesale and retail prices in trade—it helps to pay operating costs.
