A—14 FINANCIAL. THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, D. C. FRIDAY, ULY 9, 1937. FINANCIAL. POSTAL RECEIPTS IN GAPITAL SOAR Total for Fiscal Year Hits $7,388,672 Compared to Previous $7,101,580. BY EDWARD C. STONE. Total postal revenues at the City Post Office in the fiscal year 1936-7 amounted to $7.388.672 in comparison with total receipts in the comparative 1935-6 period of $7,101,580, making & substantial gain during the 12 months ot $287,092, a survey com= pleted today reveals This is the highest yearly total reached since before the Wall Street crash in 1929. It is much better than the 1934-5 figure of 6,308,074 and the 1933-4 total of $5,631,243. The individual monthly totals during the year disclose almost uninterrupted advances in postal earnings, at the same time indicating steady improve- ment in business conditions in the Capital. It was learned at the City Post Office today that postal receipts in June alone amounted to $564.646.03. This compares with $583.522 in June, 1936, a slight drop of $18,876. The fact that the soldiers’ wonus went into effect on June 15, 1936, is given as the chief reason why this year's figures were not quite up to the business transacted a year ago. Just before and when the bonus checks were distributed there was a general buying wave in Washington which gave business in the City Post Office a substantial boost. Normal conditions prevailing in June, this year were not quite suf- ficient to offset the abnormal situa- tion here a year ago. The gains in other months, however, put the yearly total well ahead of the previous 12| months. While most of the leading | business barometers are figured ac- cording to the calendar year, postal receipts are always reported for the Government's fiscal year ending on June 30. Groom Host to D. C. Bankers. The newly appointed committee chairmen and the members of the Council of Administration of the Dis- trict Bankers' Association were special guests of President Thomas J. Marked enthusiasm was shown over President Groom's many special plans for the coming year. Railroads Spend $552,381,000. While railway wage problems, legis- lative difficulties, industrial strikes and delays in obtaining deliveries of or- ders have cut down the lead of rai way buying over the previous vea figures, aggregate purchases of equip- ment during the first five months of this year were still ahead of the cor- responding totals for any year since 1929, and total purchases from manu- facturers were 55 per cent larger than the corresponding totals last year, according to figures just compiled by Railway Age “Railway purchases in the first five months of this year,” says Railway Age, “are estimated to have totaled $552.381,000, as compared with $379,- 458,000 in the same months of last year. This figure for the first five months of 1937 includes $307,519.000 for materials purchased from manu- facturers, $111,430.000 for cars and locomotives ordered from builders, and $133.432,000 for fuel. Realty Bond Issues Lower. A decline of 46 per cent in the average price of 250 real estate bond issues for the first six months of 1937 is reported by the Real Estate Bond Index maintained by Eli T. Watson & Co. ‘The index includes 250 realty issues secured by properties located in 9 cities and 14 States of the Eastern part of the United States. ‘The Index points out that the aver- age bid price for the 250 issues de- clined from 47.7 on January 2, 1937, to 45.5 on July 1, 1937, a decrease of 22 points and a percentage decrease of 4.8 per cent. For the six months’ period all types of properties showed declines, the largest being a 7.9 per cent decline for apartment hotel issues and the lowest & .7 per cent decline for theater issues. Heard in Financial District. Voters of 148 municipalities located in 31 States, during June approved municipal bond issues aggregating $10,837,843, as compared with $9,331,- 670 bonds approved during May, ac- cording to the Daily Bond Buyer. The total for June, 1036, was $6,248,390, compared with $4,558,000 in June, 1935. Gross operating revenues of the class I railroads in the Southern dis- trict for first five months in 1937 amounted to $227,316,376, an increase of 128 per cent compared with the same period in 1936, but a decrease of 222 per cent under the same period in 1930. | V.
