ATTENTION DRAWN 10 SHIPPING GAIN Foreign Trade Expansion Creates Ship Shortage in Some Lines. By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, July 1.—Reports of rapidly increasing traffic in interna- tional trade turned eyes of business analysts today to prospects of Ameri- can shipping. One of the most depressed of de- pression industries in 1932 and 1933, the movement of freight cargoes from one land to another has expanded in the last year to the point where sufficient tonnage has not always been available. The National City Bank of New York, in its monthly letter reviewing business conditions, today said that on some routes the movement of mer- chandise has increased to a point be- yond the record pre-depression years. Iron Cargoes Refused. “In the Far East trade, for ex- ample,” the review said, “cargoes of scrap iron have been refused to make space for more lucrative trade; Jap- anese shippers of steel are reported to have offered to pay treble the standard rate. “Similar crowded conditions exist in the trade routes between South Africa and this country and on the Europe to River Plate and Australia routes. Incoming freight to New York is considerably greater than last year, the American passenger travel has gained and the Summer months sail- ings are crowded.” The latter observation was pointed by reports of steamship agents that this week alone more than 17,000 per- sons sailed from New York for foreign ports. U. S. Fails to Get Its Share. Not all our share of the benefit of this expansion in shipping has gone to American lines, however, authori- ties agreed. Although the United States’ proportion of world trade is ap- proximately 14 per cent, only 7 per cent of it is carried in American bottoms, the National Council of American 8hipbuilders estimated. English ships in 1936 were paid $475.000,000 to carry freight for other nations, it was reported. One difficulty, the bank's letter pointed out, is the higher original cost of ships built in the United States and the higher cost of operating them un- der the American flag. . It was in an effort to overcome this handicap the ngw mercantile marine act providing subsidies to cover the cost differential was enacted. By the Associated Press, NEW YORK, July 1--Bank clear- ings this week dropped below those of & year ago, with the increase at the outside centers the smallest recorded since the week of September 30, 1936. Some of the loss may be attributed to the fact that July 1 settiements were included in the 1936 week, but not in the current total. The volume for 22 leading cities for the week ended June 30, as reported to Dun & Bradstreet, amounted to $5, 815,932,000, compared with $6.027,- 895,000 for the corresponding week of 1936, or a decrease of 3.5 per cent. In the year-to-year comparison for the preceding week, there was an in- crease of 11.4 per cent, which was the first rise over 1936 in four weeks. New York clearings totaled $3,678,- 545,000, against $3,900,135,000 in the like week a year ago, or a decline of 5.7 per cent. The outside centers con- tributed a total of $2,137.387,000, in contrast with $2,127,760,000 for the same week last year, or a gain of 0.5 per cent. Comparisons for individual cities revealed more declines this week from | but they dooked for the 1936 figures than for more than eight months. Some of the larger gains included: Portland, Oreg, 243 per cent; Seattle, 22.2 per cent; Buf- falo, 13.4 per cent, and Kansas City. 13.0 per cent. Among the declines were Chicago, 11.9 per cent; Omaha, 11.1 per cent: Detroit, 10.1 per cent, and New Orleans, 9.8 per cent. Bs the Associated Press, NEW YORK, July 1.—The Prench franc fell to its lowest level since December, 1926, in terms of the dollar today following removal of all restrice tions as to its gold content. The unit sold in Paris foreign ex change at 3837 cents, .625 of a cent, under the 4.46'; cents it commanded last Monday before markets were closed to permit an easing of France's financial crisis, In New Yerk the currency was quot- ed at 3.84 cents, but transactions were reported limited. A discount of 15 per cent on 90-day deliveries was said to have been offered. At its present level the new “floate ing” franc is under that of the “Poin~ care” franc of 1928, which was fixed by law at 4.92 cents. Bankers here said they expected a de facto stabiliza tion at somewhere near that figure, but preferred to await further meas- ures of the French Government before commenting on possible effects of the devaluation. Brokers and other Wall Street ob= servers said & small repatriation of French capital, particularly of the short-term variety. might take place, no bulk movement out of American securities. One partner in a brokerage house having French connections said French money that was sent here during the last few months had been invested in stocks to only a small extent, Should the stock market im= prove, he expected further reinvest~ ment of funds here rather than & move homeward. Some bankers expressed the opinion an attempt might be made to lower gradually the value of sterling in ree lation to the dollar as a result of the French move. If that were done the three currencies might be brought to about the relationship which existed prior to Great Britain'’s departure from the gold standard in 1931, =z COTTON SEAT HIGHER.
