HE Wednesday night handicap duplicate games at the Caven- dish Club in New York City are still going strong. due, no doubt, to the club’s air-cooling system, which allows the players to play their bridge in comfort. Pass 3e Pass Pass 4NT Pass Pass 6¢ Pass Pass We have indicated what we consider the best bidding on the North and South hands and the best final con- tract—a small slam in diamonds which cannot be defeated. Actually, six diamonds was con- tracted for only at one table, most players going after the maximum score of six no-trump. At several tables the contract of six no-trump was doubled by East, and if West chose the proper opening lead, the contract would be ‘ defeated. Now there are two doubling conventions in vogue for use against a slam contract: The Four Aces' lead- directing double, as applied to this par- ticular hand, calls for the lead of the first suit bid by dummy—a spade. The opening lead of a spade makes it im- possible for the declarer to fulfill his contract and when made, gave East and West a top score. The other doubling convention, in- vented by Theodore A. Lightner and sometimes quite useful, merely calls ‘ for an unusual opening, in this case a choice between hearts and spades. When West made a bad guess and opened a heart, the declarer made his contract. He would win with the ace, lead a diamond to dummy's jack, then play dummy's only club. East would be forced to play small and declarer would win with the king, then run his diamond suit, discarding three spad: WOODWARD 10™ 1™ F ANp G STREETS West. | § from dummy. Thus only five cards would be left, and if dummy retained the ace-gheen of spades and the king-queen-small of hearts, it would be impossible for East to keep his ace of clubs and protect both hearts and | spades, we now have a mbination of magic numbers, t codes and scrambled gray ma In this little gem the | numbers to occupy the square are 21 to 45, inclusive.
