By the Associated Press. CLEVELAND, June 28.—Steel mills are continuing operations at a high rate despite some signs of a Summer lull in buying, the magazine Steel said today in its weekly review of the in- dustry. “As an offset to declining needs of automotive manufacturers, while new models are being prepared, projecting needs in various other lines, largely heavy products, promise fairly early placing of substantial lots for late Bummer and Fall delivery,” the re- view said. “With the large tonnages already on books, this promises to keep production relatively high past the usual Summer lull.” The magazine said Inland Steel Co., one of the four independent concerns involved in the steel strike. has orders on books for three months from the date of resuming operations. Tin plate producers were reported pressed to accept new business, with little relief possible, since most pro- ducers are sold to capacity to Septem- ber 30. The national operating rate was given as 74 per cent of capacity, down 1!2 points from the previous week, largely due to the enforced shutdown of Bethlehem Steel's Johnstown, Pa., plant. The Pittsburgh rate dropped 10 points to 82, Youngstown dropped 1 to 29, Buffalo dropped 1 to 88 and Cin- cinnati lost 7 to 86. Cleveland district gained 3 points to 49 per cent, Detroit 2 to 99, and New England 10 to 92. Chicago was stationary at 63!, per cent, Eastern Pennsylvania held at 67, Wheeling at 93, Birmingham at 83 and St. Louis at 93. The steel works scrap composite was unchanged at $17 for the first time since a decline started in April. The iron and steel composite lost 2 cents to $39.78, through an adjustment. The finished steel composite remained at $61.70 Structural steel awards last week were given as 59.191 tons, the largest since the week of January 30. NEW YORK, June 28 (#).—Opera- tions in the steel industry for the cur- rent week declined .9 of a point to 75.0 | per cent of capacity, compared with g75 9 per cent last weck, the American { Iron & Steel Institute estimated today. | A month ago operations averaged 1 77.4 per cent of capacity while a year | ago the rate was 74.0 per cent A spokesman for the institute said the back ‘work movement at some | plants which had been affected by strikes was insufficient to offset shut- | downs elsewhere for vacation periods | and in some cases for the Fourth of July holiday. ELEGTRICAL FIRMS IN GOOD POSITION Bright Earnings Outlook Cited for Investors by Poor’s Report. Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, June 28.—The elec- trical equipment industry has been selected by Poor's Publishing Co. as one of the ten industries which offer the best profit opportunities for in- vestors. According to the company's indus- try and investment surveys, the im- proved demand enjoyed by equipment manufacturers so far in 1937 has lifted earning power to 1930 ievels in many instances. The improvement has been broad, ranging from com- panies specializing solely in the production of single household appli- ances to large organizations producing an extensive line of products for use in the utility and industrial flelds, as well as in the home. “There is every indication that the electrical equipment industry as a whole will extend further the gains made to date” states the analysis. “Increased electric power consump- tlon and prospects for further expan- sion to much higher record peaks are forcing electric power and light com- panies into the market for new cen- | tral station equipment. This expan- sion movement promises to be ac- celerated and to result in a volume of electrical equipment business that may set new records within the next few years. “In addition to a lucrative utility business, electrical equipment compa- nies can look forward with confidence to increasing orders from industry in general, as rising earnings provide the incentive for rehabilitation and ex- pansion projects. Meanwhile, pros- pective further gains in consumer purchasing power will mean increased sales of consumers’ goods, such as refrigerators, washing machines, air- conditioning units and sundry other electrical equipment for the home. Greater volume of building should also rebound to the industry's benefit by increasing demand for wiring and fixtures. “Consequently, the present year promises to witness increased volume and favorable earnings for all branches of the electrical equipment industry. Although competition among manu- facturers of household appliances will remain keen, expanding sales should sustain the upward earnings trend.” RAILWAY INCOME. STOCK EXCHANGE BROKERS TOWAWVE PAY MINIMUMS Exchange Agrees to Set Aside Rules for Stabiliza- tion of Salaries. B the Associated Press. NEW YORK, June 28.—The New York Btock Exchange today took cog- nizance of Wall Street's current de- pression in business volume by grante ing member firms permission to waive minimum salary limits for customers’ men. The action means, “until further no- tice,” the setting aside of a rule adopted a few years ago to stabilize rates of compensation for the brokers’ business getters. Brokerage circles reported the eas- ing of the rule a welcome event in view of the marked shrinkage in, trading since the two-year bull swing was halted last March. Brokers were informed by the ex- change the rule demanding that no change in salaries of customers' men, branch office managers or ‘“junior customers’ men” be made during the first six-month period of employment would stand. After the first six months, salaries may be changed quarterly. ‘! This is the second time the ex- change has permitted waiving of the minimum salaries. It acted during the depression on the plea of brokers | that maintenance of prescribed standards would result in dismissal of | many employes. The rule was rein- | stated when trading interest revived, The exchange also reminded mem- bers of a rule which prohibits adop- tion of stagger systems of work for these classes of employes unless spe- | cifically approved by the Committes on Customers’ Men. “As a matter of general policy,” the exchange announced. “the committee does not see its way clear for the present to approve stagger plans Which affect branch office managers or customers’ men.” STEEL QUOTATIONS.
