BY VICTOR EUBANK, Associpted Press Financial Writer. NEW YORK, June 7.—Early rally- ing efforts appeared in today's stock market but these were later succeeded by a generally lower drift. An afternoon break in grain, cot- ton and rubber futures took the starch out of most potential share buyers. Despite sliding tendencies exhibited. by numerous leaders, including steel, coppers and motors, several oils and specialties managed to buck the quiet selling trend for modest advances. Speculative and investment forces could find nothing outstanding in the news to stimulate action either way and the side lines were crowded with commission house customers waiting for inspiration. The ticker tape crawled from the start. It picked up a little momen- tum on the downside in the last lap, but not enough to expand the volums to any noticeable extent. Transfers were around 600,000 shares. U. 8. Steel shares dropped about 2 points at the worst. Backward also were Bethlehem Steel, Youngstown Sheet & Tube, Anaconda, Kennecott, American Smelting, General Motors, Chrysler, Briggs Mfg., U. S. Rubber, Brooklyn-Union Gas, American Water Works, Du Pont, Allied Chemical, General Electric, New Haven Pre- ferred, Santa Fe, N. Y. Central, Boeing, Douglas Aircraft, Goodyear, Montgomery Ward, Sears Roebuck, ‘Woolworth, J. I. Case, Deere and Consolidated Edison. On the resistant side were Pure Oil, Atlantic Refining, Ohio Oil, Seaboard Oil, Socony-Vacuum, Interstate De- partment Stores, American Telephong Electric Power & Light, Newport In- dustries, Lone Star Cement, Canada Dry, Southern Pacific and American Locomotive. NEW YORK COTTON By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, June 7.—Cotton prices broke almost $2 a bale today under general tired long liquidation and Wall street selling as the market gave at- tention to bearish features which had been ignored in recent weeks. Favorable crop advices, poor spot demand and dullness of the cotton goods markets were factors in the de- cline which carried prices to new low ground for the movement. October sold from 12.70 to 12.35 and was within a point of the low in mide afternoon when prices generally weng 32 to 37 points net lower. Buying was restricted to trade accounts on a scale- down.
