NEW YORK, June 7.—The output of petroleum in the United States rose to a new high monthly record of 106,724,000 barrels in March, accord- ing to the Alexander Hamilton Insti- tute. This compares with the previous high record of 98,567,000 barrels in January and with 90,568,000 barrels in March last year. Production during the first quarter amounted to 298,464,000 barrels this year as against 261,508,000 barrels last year. 1If the gain over a year ago, which occurred in March, is main- tained during the remainder of this year, the annual output in 1937 will reach a new high record of 1,284,000,- 000 barrels, as compared with the previous high record of 1,099,000,000 barrels produced last year and with the pre-depression output of 1,007,000,000 barrels in 1929, The current year will thus represent the fifth consecutive depression in 1932, when only 785,000,- 000 barrels were produced. Petroleum prices have remained relatively steady for about a year at a level considerably above the low for the depression, but well under the pre- depression level in 1929. The present high rate of output sug- gests the possibility of a reduction in petroleum prices. If the annual pro- figure indicated by the showing during the first quarter, the value of produc- | tion this year would be higher than in | 1929. The present outlook is that the na- | tional income this year will not be sufficient to support such a high value. Even if the current inflationary tional income will be as large this year as in 1929.
