NEW YORK, May 21.—Inclement weather took its toll in retail sales| this week, although the undercurrent of a swelling demand came closer o the surface, Dun & Bradstreet said today in their weekly trade review. Pending strikes caused abandon- ment of planned schedule extensions in industrial divisions, the agency said, but production totals were little dis- turbed as some manufacturers in- creased operations to work down back- logs. “Buying in wholesale markets lost little of its vigor for Summer and Fall merchandise; reorders, however, were smaller in volume,” the report stated. besding regions were ahead of last year's showing, and retail sales for the | country as a whole were 8 to 20 per, cent over last year's figure. Gains shown in major areas were: | New England, 10 to 18 per cent; East, 10 to 20; Middle West, 12 to 22; North- | west, 15 to 20; South, 12 to 20; South- west, 8 to 16, and Pacific Coast 12 to 18. | “Attractive promotional events built | the fair volume recorded,” the report | said. “Interest widened further in| graduation dresses, bridal outfits, watches, jewelry and radios. Sales of automobiles advanced to an | eight-year high. “Manufacturers of farm tractors, til- | lage, harvesting and threshing ma- | chinery were ahead of last year's ou!n put by 40 to 60 per cent. New busi- | ness in the major industries was more than sufficient to offset the cancella- | tions received.
