INGREASED PRCE FORPARKIGLOON Hornstein Declares Higher | Rates Sole Means of Meeting Expenses. Possibiiity of increased charges for parking lots in Washington loomed today with the statement of David Hornstein, counsel for the Associated Parking Lot Operators of the Dis- trict, that higher rates are the only source from which added expenses to comply with new District regula- tions can be met. “It is surprising,” Hornstein said, “that the automobile clubs, the cham- pions of the ‘people’ and others are so willing to heap additional costs of do- ing business upon these business | men.” The association, he asserted, was created several months ago to co- operate with the Commissioners “and with the public toward a mutually sat- isfactory solution to the automobile parking problem in the District and | to maintain a high standard of con- duct and ethics in the parking lot | industry.” | Attacks Held Unwarranted. Hornstein said his statement was | motivated by ‘“recent unwarranted and unfounded newspaper attacks on parking lot owners by automobile clubs, former city employes and citi- vens association spokesmen generally,” | declaring “they caused a great deal of ooncern among the lot operators be- cause it is their contention that these attacks have conveyed to the public a | misconception of their industry.” 1 “In appraising the adequacy of the new regulations which go into effect | on June 1, and by unloosing these typi- | cal blasts on parking lot operators gen- erally,” Hornstein contended, “unin- | formed persons have done gross in- | Justices to a group of business men | who represent a comparatively new | industry, faced with new and difficult | problems in the conduct of their busi- | ness. Few persons outside of the in- dustry are acquainted with their dif- | ficulties and there are plenty.” Denies Operators Irresponsible. Hornstein denied the charge he said | had been made that the lot opemmrs: are “of inadequate financial responsi- | bility,” saying “no irresponsible per- | eon could get a lease for a downtown parking lot.” He termed “absurd” the | charges “that these men disclaim all liability.” | The effect of the new regulations “is OF THE WORLD FAMOUS o w/ OsTERMO Police Aid Asked In Search for Lost Taney Papers Police have been asked to aid in the search for five valuable letters in the handwriting of former Chief Jus- tice Roger B. REBUILDING SALF! DEMOCRATIC TREND IN WEST EXPLAINED Gov. Townsend Ascribes Shift to Women'’s Persuasion of Direct Action. Gov. Clifford M. Townsend of In- diana told dinner guests of the Woman's National Democratic Club last night that two factors have put the Midwestern States in the Demo- cratic column—the fact that the women have been won to the Demo- cratic partv and the Midwesterner's liking for direct action. Gov. Townsend said the majority of women in the' Midwest have been won over to the Democratic cause “heart and soul,” and that “direct action” is & “virtue of the Roosevelt administration,” and therefore the administration has won wide support. Townsend pointed out that Indiana is half industrial and half agricul- tural and declared the administra- tion's policies toward both worker and farmer are popular in his State. The speaker said President Roose- velt'’s program has rescued the con- suming power of America and in so doing “rescued American business from itself. Farmers and workers are grateful,” Townsend said, “but the business man, like the moth which is held from the flame, wishes to rush back into the atmosphere which again would threaten destruction.” — Mind Affects Body. According to many peychologists, there can be no event in the mind which is not accompanied by some corresponding ‘event in the body, and it works both ways.
