S. Funds Help. Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, May 18.—In addition to larger receipts from marketings this year the farmers have received & substantial increase in benefit pay- ments from the Government, accord=- ing to the Alexander Hamilton In- stitute. Benefit payments in March amounted to $111,000,000 this year, as against $15,000,000 last year. For the first quarter these payments to- taled $206,000,000, as compared with only $16,000,000 a year ago. Benefit payments raised the farm- ers' total income in March to $707,- 000,000. This represented an increase of 36 per cent over the $520,000,000 received in the same month last year. Total farm cash income, in- cluding benefit payments, in the first quarter amounted to $1,945,000,000, as against $1,520,000,000 a year ago, an increase of 28 per cent. If the increase in total farm income over a year ago which occurred in March should be maintained during the remainder of 1937 the annual farm income this year would amount to $10,574,000,000, as compared with $7,865,000,000 last year and with $4,328,000,000 at the low for the de- pression in 1932. It would exceed the income of $10,479.000,000 in the | pre-depression year 1929. DOLLAR GOES DOWN IN LONDON DEALINGS By the Associated Press. The index last week stood at 87.3 per cent of the 1926-1928 average, compared witi 87.3 in the preceding week, and the high point of the year, 88.7, in the first week of April. A year ago the index was 75.1, Although there was no change dur- ing the week in the all-commodity in- dex, four of the principal group indexes declined and only two advanced. Higher prices for livestock, which more than offset declines in cotton and grains, resulted in an upturn in the index of farm product prices. It was the rise in this group which was pri- marily responsible for the failure of the all-commodity index to show & decline. Reflecting an advance in fuel oil prices, the fuel index rose to a new high point for the recovery period. Food prices were generally lower last week, with 16 items represented in the index declining and only seven ad- vancing; the group index receded to the lowest level reached since last Fall. Further recession occurred in the Steamer Chairs with durable natural wood rame Covered QDB in heavy duck. Metal wardrobe that provides plenty of room. 14 Attractively fin- ished in brown 4 enamel D. The only ohanges in metal prices during the week were down- ward, but they were too small to change the index. CHICAGO LIVE STOCK. CHICAGO.
