By the Assoctated Press. NEW YORK, May 12.—United States Government loans slipped a cog to- day in a quiet mixed bond market. Losses in the Federal list ran to as much as 8-32ds of a point in late trading. Liquidation appeared to have been influenced by reports of Treagury preparations for June financing, off- setting further economy moves in Congress. In contrast, top-grade corporate bonds for the most part more than held their own, with such issues as American Telephone 3s, Santa Fe general 4s and Northern Pacific 4s up fractionally. Ralls on the whole were outstand- ing on the advance as sustained oper- ations in heavy industries plus indica« tions of a larger crop haul turned the spotlight on the carrier group. Great Northern 4s ran up more than 2 in sympathy with strength in some rail shares. Minor losses were recorded in Amer- ican Water Works 6s, Goodyear 5s, International Paper 5s. North Amer- ican 5s and Texas Corp. 3'as A rise of nearly 2 points in Uruguay | 6s contrasted with restricted action in | most foreign issues. DIVIDENDS ANNOUNCED NEW YORK. BY the Associated Press. NEW YORK, May 12.—The Edison Electric Institute reported today pro- duction of electricity in the United States for the week ended May 8 to- taled 2,176,383,000 kilowatt hours. This was a decrease of 0.8 of 1 per cent from the previous week’s figure of 2,193,779,000 kilowatt hours, but an increase of 12.8 per cent over the total of 1,928,203,000 kilowatt hours in the same week a year ago. The decrease, which was contra- seasonal, brought down the Associated Press index*of electric power produc- tion for the same week, with 1929- 1930 taken as 100, to 118.1 from 118.9 the previous week. A year ago it stood at 107.9. The index is adjusted for seasonal and long-term trend. The range for recent years follows: 1937. 1936. 1935. 1934. 1933. NEW YORK, May 12 —Holly Sugar Corp. reported today for the fiscal year ended March 31, last, consolidated net profit of $2,881,670 equal after pre- ferred dividends to $5.42 a common share. This compares with $2,684519, or $5.02 a share in the preceding fiscal period. The net income was before provision for undistributed profits tax although such tax, if held due, would be met with funds in the contingency reserve. In this connection the annual report stated, “the corporation's contingency reserve of $650,000 remains the same as last year and is beieved ample to take care of all contingencies including any ‘unjust enrichment’ tax under the 1936 revenue act.” It is not believed the company is liable for such a tax, but if final determination should be otherwise, the payment will be charged against this reserve.” Wiley Blair, jr., president, in his re- marks to stockholders stated there was some legal doubt whether the com- pany, under its charter, could pay more than a $2 dividend on the com- moén so long as there was any out- standing preferred The company plans to spend about $2,500,000 on plant improvement and construction this year. This includes roughly $500,000 for miscellaneous im- provements and more than $2,000,000 for rebuilding the factory at Alvarado, Calif, and for a new factory at Hardin, Mont. Plants are located in Colorado, Mon- tana, Wyoming and California, and headquarters are at Colorado Springs, Colo , Washington Exchange SALES. Mergenthaler Linotype—1 at 45. 170, 2 at 165. A Real Estate Title Insurance Co.—10 at | PACE MAINTAINED AT STEEL PLANTS Decline in New Business Re- flects Ample Stocks for Nearby Needs. By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, May 12.—Steel produc- tion remains at a high level through- out the country but new business con- tinues to shrink moderately, reflecting ample stocks of consumers for nearby needs, Iron Age sald today in the weekly review of the industry. Consumption is heavy in many lines, however, the review added, with the result that current orders repre- sent actual requirements. “Prospects for third quarter are falrly promising,” the trade journal said, “with indications the Summer letdown may be less than might be expected in view of the heavy pro- duction of the first half of the year. “Strike threats against some of the leading independent steel companies, which may come to a head this week, have had no discernible effect upon new steel purchases, but may account for renewed pressure on mills for quicker deliveries. * * * The steel pro- duction rate for the country remains at 92 per cent, the same as last week. “Business was aided in the past week by fresh releases from some auto- mobile companies, the placing of steel for recent construction awards and for railroad equipment and by a rising demand for steel in the farm equip- ment industry. Demand for farm machinery, including tractors, has risen far beyond the expectations of manufacturers in that fleld. “Steel scrap prices continue down- ward. The Iron Age composite price dropped to $18.75, marking the fifth consecutive weekly decline.” CLEVELAND, Ohio, May 12 (#).— Daily Metal Trade today says: Bteel consumers continue to specify | actively, but new demand is noticeably slower. Bars are being shipped steadily, al- though pressure for deliveries has| eased considerably since third-quarter | prices were announced unchanged. | Demand from agricultural imple- | ment manufacturers, railroad car shops and machinery builders is hold- ing up better than expected Structura] steel fabricators expect | an improved demand over coming | months.
