Reilly, 83, prominent writer fa Catholic publications and retired Government employe, died Yesterday at his home, 6006 Broad Branch road. He had been i{ll about seven months Until his re- tirement in 1925, Mr. Reilly for many years was examiner and in- vestigator in the swamp land di- vision of the General Land Office. He en- tered Govern- ment service as special agent of the Land Office in 1904 and served as investigator of swamp grant claims during the con- troversy over their settlement. His activities resulted in the safe- guarding of the right of the Govern- ment to extensive areas of valuable timber and mineral lands sought by individuals through State action. A native of New York City, Mr. Reilly graduated with a bachelor of arts degree from St. Francis Xavier's College there. He received his mas- ter's degree from Notre Dame Uni- versity. i A contributor to Catholic publica- tions since 1876, he was editor of the Catholic Mirror, Baltimore, for seven years; editor of the Catholic Colum- bian for five years and associate editor of the Baltimore Catholic Review for two years. For several years he was connected with the Pittsburgh Ob- server and Columbian of Columbus, ©Ohio. He also wrote for the Catholic Telegraph, Catholic Union and Times, Catholic American and other papers. In 1884 he married Miss Rose Mapes of this city. Surviving are his widow, and the following children, Mrs. Wil- liam H. Ontrich, Mrs. Matthew G. Lepley and Mrs. Charles E. Davis, all of Washington; Mrs. L. J. HOME lliness of Several Months Proves Fatal to Civic Leader. Daniel A. E’iwards, 70, head of the Columbian Correspondence College here and long a civic leader, died yes- terday at his home, 1008 Massachu- setts avenue northeast, after an illness of several months. Mr. Edwards at one time was presi- dent of the Federation of Citizens’ Associations and shortly after the ‘World War was president of the Board of Education for two years. He was president of the Lincoln Park Citi- zens’ Association for nine years after its organization. At the time of his death, Mr. Ed- wards was vice president of the Fran= cis Scott Key Corp. here, which oper- ates the apartment hotel of that name. He was a fourth degree member of the Knights of Columbus, a member of the Holy Name Society of Holy Comforter Catholic Church, and the Ancient Or- der of Hibernians. Held Many Other Offices. Other offices he had held in past years include that;of president of the Home and School Association of East- ern High School, president of the Michigan Club, trustee of the Public Library for nine years, and director of the Savings Security and Commercial Bank for seven years. For 20 years he was auditor of the Congress Hall Hotel. Born in Port Huron, Mich, Sep- tember 16, 1866, Mr. Edwards came to Washington in 1896. With his brother, the late James Edwards, he organized the Columbian Correspond- ence College. Before coming to Washington, Mr. Edwards was active in Michigan poli- tics. In 1890 he was a candidate on the Democratic ticket for the State Legislature. He was a speaker for the Michigan State Democratic Commit- tee during one of Grover Cleveland’s campaigns for the presidency. Was Michigan Alumnus. In June, 1894, Mr. Edwards was graduated in law from the University of Michigan and was admitted to the bar of the Supreme Court of Michi- gan. Subsequently, he was admitted to the bar of the United States Su- preme Court. He received his master of law degree in 1896. Earlier, from 1888 to 1890, Mr. Ed- wards was principal of the Hobart School, near Cadillac, Mich. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Katherine Edwards three sons, James, Angus and John Edwards, and daughter, Mrs. Lydia Monaghan, all of this city. Funeral service will be held at 9 am. tomorrow in Holy Comforter Church, followed by burial in Mount Olivet Cemetery. o Courtesy Helps Safety. BRANDENBURG DIES AT AGE OF 59 Physician Was on Board of Police and Fire Surgeons for 27 Years. Dr. Wilbur H. R. Brandenburg, 59, for 27 years a member of the Board of Police and Pire Surgeons of the District of Columbia, died yesterday %1 George Washington University Hospital. He was taken to the hos- pital after being stricken at his home in the Parkwood Apartments. A native of Washington, Dr. Bran- denburg was a son of the late Fred- erick H. Brandenburg and the late Gertrude E. Brandenburg. His only immediate survivor is & brother, Clar- ence A. Brandenburg, Denver, Colo. Another brother was the late Edwin C. Brandenburg, prominent lawyer here for many years. Dr. Brandenburg graduated in medicine from the old Columbian Col- lege, now George Washington Uni- versity. After serving as an interne at Bellevue Hospital in New York and at Garfleld Hospital here he began practice in the District. He was a member of the Columbia Country' Club and the Masonic fra- ternity. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. tomorrow in Oak Hill Cemetery Chapel. Rev. Dr. J.
