A—16 = THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, D. C, WEDNESDAY, MAY 12, 1937. FREENAN LAUDS FOUNDING FATHERS Ideals and Principles Must Be Maintained, Bishop Declares. Addressing a congregation which | filled the Church of the Epiphany last evening for the opening of the annual Diocesan Convention of the Protestant Episcopal Communion, Right Rev. James E. Freeman, Bishop | of Washington, defended the ideals and objectives of the founding fathers | of the Republic. The framers of the Constitution, he declared, were “moved by high mo- tives and inspired by a holy trust in a divine power.” Insisting that “the men who gath- ered in Philadelphia in May, 1787, to erect a mighty state” were reverent and prayerful individuals, the bishop argued: “Their great and commanding leader, George Washington, stands among the world’s supreme masters as a man of the highest Christian sider what concessions it would be willing to make if the general con- vention looks with favor upon this city as the logical place for its Fed- eral seat of administration.” Dealing with social service prob- lems in the diocese and throughout the country, Bishop Freeman asserted that the church must look wtih favor upon ‘“everything that makes for bet- tering conditions in the world in which we live.” More than 100 delegates and vestry- men representing all the parishes of the diocese and 75 members of the clergy marched in the procession at the beginning of the service. Rev. Dr. George F. Dudley read the prayers. | In the absence of the choir, the hymns were sung by the congregation, with Mrs. Griffith Johnson at the organ. Today's session of the convention was being held at Rock Creek Parish | Church. “ANGEL OF BROADWAY” AND AIMEE AT PEACE Rheba Crawford Spivalo's Attor- neys Agree to Settlement of Slander Suit. LOS ANGELES, May 12.—The dove of peace fluttered yesterday over the | erstwhile embattled evangelists, Aimee character, whose life and service to | Semple McPherson and Rheba Craw- his country constitute one of the brightest pages in its history. * * * ‘We esteem too lightly the Christianity of those who laid the foundations whereon we have builded this great Nation. Our work would prove of lit- tle worth were it built on less secure footings. “Whether there are those within our gates who fail to acknowledge their debt and obligation to the ideals and the Christian principles that are our rich inheritance or not, it is for us who do believe in these ideals to maintain and preserve them unim- paired and to steadfastly adhere to them. We will adjust ourselves to | new and changed conditions, but we will not permit any influence, how- ever arrogant, that proceeds from ford Spivalo. Attorneys for the former ‘“‘Angel of | iBroadway" were ready to move for | dismissal of her $1,080,000 slander | suit against Mrs. McPherson, pastor | of Angelus Temple. Agreement on a cash settlement was reached out of court, last night. The case was “amicably adjusted in deference to the earnest solicitation of the Christian ministry,” the oppos- | ing attorneys announced in a joint statement. A delegation of ministers previously had urged the evangelists possibfe. There are immutable principles that we will not subject to the capri- | . cious wills of self-seeking and willful men. Washington affirmed that mo- | rality and religion were the sure and indispensable props that sustain the state. Morality and religion the church is appointed to safeguard and protect.” Specifically referring to the religious aspect of the sequicentennial of the Constitution, Bishop Freeman told his hearers: “We shall dishonor its high- minded authors if we do not see in them and their incomparable service the aspirations and high aims ofl Christian men.” Tells of Cincinnati Meeting. ‘The bishop urged diocesan interest in the general convention of the Epis- copal church, to be held at Cincinnati in October. “This year,” he said, “one of the vitally important matters for consideration has to do with the pol- icy of the church with reference to its national center, as the seat of the | presiding bishop and administrative | offices.
