The Frontier Nursing Service was | organized 11 years ago to improve liv- | Ing conditions among people in the | Kentucky Mountains. Through its widely separated nursing centers it maintains a group of nurse-midwives who take many risks to attend women | in childbirth, to nurse the sick, and to teach hygiene. It has an 18-bed emer- gency hospital, its own medical dir tor and a consulting surgeon. It-co- operates with Federal and State euthorities and with the Rockefeller Foundation for the eradication of trachoma and hookworm. It has given over 77,000 inoculations against com- municable diseases, such as typhoid, diphtheria, smallpox and influenza. The service reports success in reduc- tng the maternal death rate in the last 10 years, and in protecting and fos- tering the lives of young children.
