A few shares recovered fractionally from previous setbacks. but the main list worked lower as the session ap- proached the close. Bunker Hill & Sullivan dropped more than 3 points and major frac- tions were clipped from Atlantic & Pacific, Gulf Oil, American Cyan- amid "B and Sherwin-Williams. Aluminum Co. of America broke sharply following announcement the Government had brought suit against 1t under the anti-trust laws. Newmont Mining picked up nearly 2 points and Bower Roller Bearing gained slightly more than that. Most other gains were narrow. BY the Associated Press. NEW YORK, April 23.—Union Car- bide and Carbon Corp. reported for the quarter ended March 31 net in- come of $9.947,712, equal to $1.10 a share on capital stock. This compared with $7.502,393, or 83 cents a share for the March quarter last year. For the 12 months ended March 31 net income amounted to $39,297,527, equal to $4.37 a share. This compared with & balance equal to $3.27 a share for the 12 months ended March 31, 1936. National Cash Register. National Cash Register Co., Dayton, Ohio. in a report for quarter ended March 31 showed net profit of $817,- 884, equal to 50 cents a share on the capital stock, against $341,750, or 21 cents a share in the March quarter last year. For the 12 months ended March 31 net profit was $3,341,475, equal to $2.05 a share, against $1,665,384, or $1.02 a share for preceding 12 manths. Sales for March quarter totaled $10.- 455,912, against $8,376,865 in the 1936 period. For the 12 months sales were $45,056,384, against $35,929,465 for pre- vious 12 months. Tide Water Associated. Tide Water Associated Oil Co. an- nounced an increase in the common stock dividend and disclosed first quarter profits of $3,328.303, com- pared with $2707,703 for the like period last year. The dividend, amounting to 20 cents a share, payable June 1 to stock of record May 10, contrasted with 15 cents in previous quarters. The first quarter profits were equal to 39 cents a share on common stock, after preferred dividend requirements, against 31 cents a share on the com- mon in the March quarter last year. Avery of Montgomery Ward ‘& Co. told stockholders at their an- | nual meeting today the company was | “in very great need of additional | working capital.” “This lack of capital,” Avery said, “is not surprising in the light of the undistributed profit tax, which is villainously unsound. This will have to be changed, and I think it will be | changed or this Nation will be | changed—seriously.” Because of the Federal tax on une- distributed profits, Avery asserted. the company had paid out its 1936 net | profits of $20,198914 in the form of dividends.
