RETAL VOLUNES WELL ABDVE 1% Gains of 8 to 15 Per Cent Over Year Ago Shown by Dun & Bradstreet. B3 the Assoclated Press. NEW YORK, April 16.—Cross cur- rents were evident in some divisions of trade this week, Dun & Bradstreet said today in the weekly review of business. “Many retallers had the most con- sistent improvement thus far this Spring,” the agency said, “while the uneven gain of others varied daily with wide weather fluctuations. “Wholesale volume was buoyed chiefly by Summer requirements, as substantial stocks slowed re-orders to most apparel branches. “Urgency for delivery spread to more divisions, but the rise of industrial operations in some districts was short- ened by the confusion in the labor situation.” The agency estimated retail sales for the country as a whole at from | 8 to 15 per cent above the same week | last year, but when compared with | the immediately preceding period some key cities reported declines. | Percentage gains over the 1936 comparative in major geographic re- gions were: New England, 10 to 16; Bast, 8 to 20; Middle West, 12 to 18; Northwest, 12 to 22; South, 12 to 20; Southwest, 8 to 12, and Pacific Coast, 10 to 20. “Vagaries of the weather were the controlling factor in retail distribu- tion,” the review said. “Crowded | stores on fair days revealed that con- sumer buying has yet to adopt its full Spring stride. Most merchandise was bought at regular prices, although sporadic clearances mark-downs on incomplete assort- ments. Dresses frequently superseded the demand for suits and coats. Movement of accessories'was slower.” “Market week” events in principal wholesale centers was a factor in bringing out a large number of buy- ers, the review said, especially at places which attracted country mer- chants, whose purchases were made generous as a result of msing prices for farm products. offered small |, THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, D.
