NEW YORK, March 30.—Labor un- rest has already increased automobile manufacturing costs, although the evi- dence indicates that present retail prices will be maintained at least un- til the 1938 models are introduced, ac- cording to a new report appearing in| Poor’s Industry and Investment Sur- | veys. “Direct labor cost approximated $138 per car last year, and it is now approaching $150 a car,” continues the report. “Furthermore, pay increases have been granted in indus' “ies which provide automobile manufacturers with . major portion of their raw ma- terials and parts. Although there may be some lag in passing these increases along, higher material prices must be expected eventually. “Meanwhile, profit margins are be- ing cut down. Sales in January and February ran well ahead of the corresponding months of last year, and many dealer: have been building up stocks against a ‘Spring rush’ of buying. Early e mates placed 1937 production as high as 5,700,000 cars and trucks, slightly greater than the 1929 peak of 5,622,00C units. How= ever, such estimates seem overopti- ‘| ne said mistic, irrespective of labor difficulties | which have already curtailed aggre- | gate production by at least 200,000 | units so far this year. Crosley estimated the company’s loss | from the fire that destroyed its build- ing January 24 at approximately | $500,000, fully insured. The flood and fire, he said, caused the company to fall “considerably behind” in its last year's production in refrigerators. All directors and officers were re- elected. PRINCESS ANNE, Md., March 37 - Cold weather in the last few days has delayed the planting of some crops on the Lower Eastern Shore and has aroused worry in the minds of potato growers who fear their harvest will be delayed. ‘The potato planters said their crop is grown in competition with North Carolina and Virginia potatoes, and that a delay of as much as a week in growing them may glut the market and force prices down. Extensive acreage of early white Irish potatoes has already been planted, especially in the districts along the Pocomoke River in the Rehoboth district and in Dublin and East and West Princess Anne.
