CLEVELAND, Ohio, January 20.— Daily Metal Trade today says: Growing shortage of world steel sup- plies is being reflected in an increas- ing export demand. Tin plate prices have been marked up in the foreign market and it is reported premiums are being paid on a number of other products moving in that trade. Meanwhile, domestic demand is de- veloping in encouraging volume de- spite the automotive labor trouble and resulting lessened consumption at cer- tain auto plants. Miscellaneous buyers, however, are re-entering the market, reflecting con- tinued active consumption. CURB BONDS DOMESTIC BONDS. High. BS the Associated Press. NEW .YORK, January 20.—Chesa- peake & Ohio Railway Co. preliminary report for 1936 shows net income of $43,496,092, equal, after preferred divi- dends, to $5.67 a common share, against $30,893,495, or $4.03 a common share, in 1935. December surplus, after charges, in- cluding sinking fund appropriations, was $4,487,830, against $2,662,897 in December, 1935. Southern Pacific. SAN FRANCISCO, January 20 (). | —Southern Pacific Co. reported its December net operating income was $6,969,487—the highest for any month since October, 1929, when the figure was $7,774,000. In spite of the fact that about $1,- 900,000 of the increase from Novem- ber's $3,833,093 net resulted from beokkeeping changes, net was the best since 1929. The management's expressed opin- ion was that most of the rise came from a combination of general busi- ness gains, the attainment by the company of a position where in- creases in gross business tend to boost profits sharply, and traffic diverted from water carriers by the maritime strike. Liggett & Myers. Liggett & Myers Tobacco Co. reported today consolidated net income for the year ended December 31 of $24,207.- 631, equal to $7.25 a share on the combined common and “B" common shares. This compared with $16,856,- 543, or $4.91 a share, in 1935. Directors declared the regular quar- terly dividends of $1 a share on the common and “B” common stock, to be paid March 1 to holders of record February 26. The management said in view of the extra dividend of $2 a share, paid December 18, no extra div- % | jdend would be declared at this time. 3| T % 134 l" 1315 1315 1634 1634 107 10734 175 1% £ 6% 663 6 6t —————————————————— 2:30 Stockand Sales— Dividend Rate.
