WOMENTOLAUNCH MARIHUANA FIGHT Nation-Wide Drive Against Drugs Use in Cigarettes Promised. A Nation-wide campaign against the use in cigarettes of the marihuana weed—a narcotic plant believed to cause insanity—was promised today by the General Federation of Women’s Clubs at its annual board meeting at federation headquarters here. Declaring that the increasing use of the drug is concerning law en- forcement officers in all the States, Mrs. William Dick Sporburg of Port s Chester, N. Y., as chairman of the department of legislation, said that the federation would wage a concen- trated drive for a uniform State nar- cotic act to bridge the gap between Federal and State laws in the whole field of narcotic smuggling and boot- ging. “An entirely new type or class of person is found using marihuana,” Mrs. Sporburg declared. “Persons who know nothing about ordinary habit-forming drugs are smoking the weed. It has a most degenerative effect and its habitual use invariably leads to insanity.” Tea is Scheduled. A tea at the White House, with Mrs. Franklin D. Roosevelt receiving, was scheduled for the afternoon. Eerlier, the board was to be ad- dressed by Dr. Thomas Parran, jr., surgeon general of the United States | Public Health Service, in connection | with its work under the Public Wel- fare Department. Other legislation to be supported by the federation this year includes re- peal of section 213 of the economy act, deportation of criminal aliens, | establishment of a national academy of public affairs for training Govern- | ment personnel and uniform State | safety traffic laws. | Calling present laws pertaining to | eriminal alien deportation a paradox, Mrs. Sporburg said: “An alien in good standing who may have entered this country years ago and married an American wife or | husband is subject to deportation if | there is some technical mistake in| the visa, and not even the President | has power to intervene. On the other hand, a convicted criminal, unless he | has served sentence within five years of his entrance, is not deportable.” Warns of War, Capt. Willis S. Bryant, author of | “And It Shall Come to Pass,”| warned the federation of impending | war and asserted that the “forces of | destruction loosed in 1914 cannot | compare with what will be loosed now—when war comes.” | A five-point program to promote . public safety in relation to traffic hazards was suggested yesterday by Burton W. Marsh of the American Automobile Association. It includes | legislation, organization and adminis- tration, engineering, education and en- Zorcement. “And the significant thing,” he said, *is that where that attack is being carried on, the results are being obtained.” WOL MOVES STUDIOS New Quarters in Heurich Building | to Be in Operation Soon. Station WOL, local Mutual net- work affiliate, has moved its studios | to the recently-completed Heurich | Building, 1726 K street, from the An- napolis Hotel. The new quarters, oc- cupying the entire fifth floor, will not be placed in actual operation until next week.
