By the Asscclated Press. NEW YORK, January 15.—Bigger 1937 railroad budgets for improve- ments were cited in financial circles | today as ope trend which may help Uncle Sam cut Federal relief expendi~ tures, The carriers, after almost retiring from the equipment market in the worst depression years, have embarked upon the largest buying campaign since the close of 1929 and early 1930. Railway Age, a trade publication, reported purchases of materials, sup- plies and equipment in December shot up to about $120,000,000, almost twice the comparable 1935 figure and the biggest monthly total since January, 1930. Orders accumulating on books of equipment makers, together with in- creased expenditures for steel and other materials, will mean many new jobs as manufacturers expand oper- ations. Carries Into New Year. ‘The revival in rail equipment buy- ing hit a brisk stride a few weeks ago and carried into the new year. A major source of business for heavy industry, the railroads in 1929 wer: spending as high as $180,000,000 monthly for materials, supplies and equipment. ‘The total dropped as low as $29,000,000 in July, 1932, Part of the present increase is at- tributed to higher prices, but revival is credited chiefly to improvement in | traffic and earnings and accumulated needs. During the depression rail- roads sent several hundred thousand more cars to the scrap heap than they bought. Aside from new equipment, Railway Age figures the carriers may spend around $160,000,000 this year for re- bullding old cars and lomomotives. Santa Fe to Spend. The Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe's 1937 budget calls for expenditure of $41,094,000 on improvements, includ- ing $20,000,000 for new equipment, | compared with $21,283,000 in 1936. ‘The New York Central has ordered 100 locomotives, the largest single or- der in seven years. Southern Pacific | mapped out $22,500,000 in expendi- tures for new equipment. Many other roads, in their first im- aenl Leeoa o SHORT-TERM SECURITIES. (Reported by Chas. D. w"'fi'; & ool Ofte! Amer.
