NEW YORK, January 15.—Net earn- ings of American Telephone & Tele- graph Co. available for dividends in 1936 were equal to $0.36 a share, 36 cents more than the annual dividend, the company’s preliminary report, made public today, disclosed. It was the first time since 1931 that net earnings were equal to dividend requirements. In the intervening four years the full dividend of $9 each was paid from earnings and surplus. Net profit on a parent company basis for the period, with figures for the final three months partly esti- mated, totaled $174,715,000, or $9.36 & share. This compares with 3125,006,- 504.78, or $6.74 & share, in 1935. For the final quarter net profit was $60,136,000, equal to $3.22 a share, against $35,053,026.32, or $1.88 a share, in the like period last year. A note points out that due to “an unusual concentration of dividend revenues in the three months ending December 31, 1936, the earnings for this period are not indicative of the annual rate of earnings of the company.” The consolidated report of the Bell System, which includes Telephone and 23 associated compa- nies, for the 12 months ended No- vember 30, shows net earnings of $178,195,433, or $9.54 a share of the which was available for dividends. This compares with $127,495000, or $6.83 a share, in the like period of 1935. President Walter S. Gifford in his report said that the system had a net gain of 880,000 telephones in 1936, compared with 461,000 in 1935. There were about 14,735,000 telephones in service on December 31, 1936, which was 855,000 less than the total reached in 1930. Number of toll and long distance calls in 1936 was about 12 per cent greater than in 1835, but 10 per cent less than in the record year 1930, he said, CHICAGO LIVE STOCK. CHICAGO. FINANCIAL, WEATHER GURBS RETAIL VOLUMES Wholesale Centers Active and Industrial Indices Point Upward. By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, January 15.—Retail trade was unsettled this week, but wholesale business set a fast tempo, and industrial indices pointed upward, Dun & Bradstreet reported today in the weekly review. Unseasonably warm weather re- dise in many areas, the trade agency | said. On the wholesale front, how- ever, buyers crowded into centers| holding trade shows, with some cities reporting a record number for the period.
