SUPPOSE we all have things uut hnunt us. Of course I don't chains and mymrtolu knocks, but some- thing intimately connected with our lives that persists in thrusting itself into our consclousness, repeats itself endlessly until it seems we must go mad. Any one who is completely wrapped up in his work, no matter what that work may be, knows what I mean. For me, a singer, it is the.music I sing. After an opera I find it im- possible to “let down,” as you Amer- icans have {t. The arias and their orchestral accompaniment roll on and on in my mind until it seems that my poor head must split. I've found only one way to stop it—solitaire. I take out a pack of cards and play game after game, sometimes until 2 o'clock in the morning, until the music in my head stops. After my first appear- ance as Isolde at the. Metropolitan I heard the entire opera repeated after I went to bed. I know I shall be in for a trying time Saturday, as I sing Isolde again, Richard Wagner's immortal love drama, “Tristan and Isolde,” is broad- cast by the National Broadcasting Co. direct from the stage of the Metro- poltian, through the courtesy of the Radio Corp. of America. There is something particularly wistful, long- ing—yes, even agonizing—about this ecstatic love tragedy. Many of you already know the legend of Tristan and Isolde. Tristan, sent by his uncle, King Mark of Corn- wall, to exact tribute of Morold and to bring back the beautiful Isolde to become Mark’s queen, slays the recal- citrant knight, but is himself gravely wounded. Isolde, unaware that it was Tristan who killed her betrothed, ten- BY KIRSTEN FLAGSTAD, derly nurses him back to health, after which he takes her aboard ship to deliver her to his uncle. The opera opens here, when Isolde learns the truth. She is inflamed with anger and calls Tristan to offer him a deadly poison. He, expecting death, gallantly accedes, but before he can drain the contents she snatches the cup from him to end her own life, too. But her attendant has substi- tuted a love potion and, as the ship nears land, the two unwillingly yield and fly to each other’s arms. In the second act we learn that one of Mark’s courtiers suspects the love of Tristan and Isolde, who has now become the King's bride. A ruse suc- oceeds and Tristan is caught with his est expression! In the mighty climax of the bitter-sweet melody of Isolde’s Love-Death we have the greatest love music ever written. I'm certain that any one who hears it, even for the hundredth time, will hear it over and beloved. His uncle bitterly chides him | '8 for his disloyalty, but the courtier breaks all restraint and attacks the tormented Tristan. The latter is borne away into exile by Kurvenal, his devoted servant. He lies delirious as the final act opens. Kurvenal bids & shepherd scan the horizon for the sail which shall herald the reunion of the lovers, which alone, say the shepherds, can heal their master. At length the ship ap- proaches. The enraptured Tristan rises, tears off his bandages, then sinks dying to the floor. Isolde arrives too late and falls upon her lover's dying body, herself expiring of grief. ‘Wagner has taken all the ecstasy, despair and passion of tragic love and distilled them into his music. It is feeling, sentiment, raised to its high- e SURGERY TOOL CARRIED IN BODY FOR 16 YEARS By the Associated Press. CHATTANOOGA, Tenn., December 31.—An operation 16 years ago cost Mrs. C. I. Ellison, 42, another yester- day, for removal of a 6-inch, old- fashioned surgical instrument. Dr. W. A, Banks, who removed the instrument from between tissues of the abdominal cavity, described it as an outmoded “groove director.” Mrs. Ellison’s husband said his wife had complained of a “tired feeling” for years. An X-ray picture disclosed the instrument Tuesday. Dr. Banks said last night the patient will recover, CarrtaL’s Rapio PROGRAMS | WMAL 630k | WOL 1,310k | WJSV 1,460k | P.M.
