Just about 2 miles westward is the foot of Pikes Peak, the snow-capped mountain sighted in 1806 by Lieut. Zebulon Pike as he camped with his Government soldiers at Fort Pueblo, 45 miles to the south- east. Lieut. Pike left part of his troops behind and took with him a small group to scale the high peak. Actual- 1y he climbed Cheyenne Mountain, discovering his error when he looked to the west from the top of Cheyenne. Pike told his men that the ‘peak which took his name could never be scaled by man. Today there is & wide automobile highway and a novel cog railroad to the top of Pikes Peak, as well as & zig-zagging ladder to the sky roadway up the face of Cheyenne Mountain—both highways and cog road having been built by the same Spencer Penrose who has built the Rogers Shrine. Penrose, one of the builders of the West, has taken millions in gold from the Cripple Creek mines at the western base of Pikes Peak. This new shrine is just one of the many things Mr. Penrose has done to turn his millions into beautifying the re- gion and making the scenic wonders available to the American travelers. Boulder Yields Pink Granite. More than 5,000 cubic yards of light pink granite has been taken from s single boulder of Cheyenne Moun- tain as material for the tower, which was designed by Charles E. Thomas s0 that its sharp angles would catch and play with the afternoon shafts of sunlight shooting over the higher mountains and enhance its stately beauty. Within the tower are four small rooms, connected by the spiral stairs leading from the base to the observation point on the top. From the top is & great panorama of plains to the east and the jagged peaks beckoning cordiality from the other three directions. This is a view which Rogers and Penrose often enjoyed to- gether. ‘With powerful glasses & person can look through the clear Colorado sky to the Kansas horizon 100 miles away, or into Rogers’ native Oklahoms, 150 miles to the southeast. By the end of Spring the tower will be floodlighted at night, and from its tip a sodium light, similar to those used on the new San Francisco-Oak- land Bridge, will be lighted—to burn forever. Travelers from the East will be able to see the light for 125 miles. In the base of the shrine will be She Will Rogers room. Joe Davidson, the noted American sculptor who lives in Paris, has been commissioned by Mr. Penrose to make an oversize bust of Will Rogers for the room. Pen- rose has just returned from Paris, where he personally arranged the statuary with Davidson, who.also knew Rogers well during his lifetime. Also in the memorial room will be a col- lection of Will Rogers’ relics and paintings of the humorist. Davey Works on Murals. Randall Davey, the internationally known painter from Santa Fe, has been working for months on decora- tions and murals for the tower. He §s now engaged in transferring his works in fresco on the interior walls of the tower. The paintings will por- tray Western history from about 1789, starting with tihe Spaniards’ coloniza- tion of New Mexico. As the history is developed in paintings, they will be placed on the walls, s0 that a visitor may follow the paintings in chrono- logical order as he or she ascends the stairs, The pictopial history of the de- velopment of the West will show Pike and his discovery, the Forty-niners, Leadville trading with the Indians, war with hostile tribes, conquering of the red man, first location of Oolorado Springs, discovery of gold in the Crip- ple Creek district, the gilded night lfe of the mining camps and the entrance of Gen. Palmer, Spencer Pen- sose, Will Rogers and other Western figures, and will conclude with the Colorado and Western history up to the present time. Many engineering ohstacles were met and overcome in actually digging the monument from the mountain and erécting it on the face of the peak. In the early construction stages, Mil- ton J. Strong, the construction super- intendent, had one guy cable 600 feet long and afother 125 feet long frdm the tower to the mountainside. Varying temperatures caused s pull on the long wire so strong that the e ——— GRANDS UPRIGHTS MIDGET PIANOS FOR RENT HUGO WORCH 1110 G. Rental fee of $600 worth of unusual equipment was necessary to mount & 16-ton boulder on one of the orna- mental gate pillars of the wall that surrounds the shrine. The 1,500 cubic yards of granite in the artistic wall also came from the same single boulder as the tower. In the low-walled inclosure is being transplanted all of the native Colorado flowers and the various spe- cles of Colorado evergreen trees. In this setting is now being com- pleted the Will Rogers Shrine of the Sun, which will be officially dedicated with appropriate ceremonies next June or July. THREE HELD IN MURDER REMOVED FOR SAFETY Suspects in “Head and Hands” Slaying Described as Desperate. By the Associated Press. BROOKVILLE, Ind, December 26.—State police took three men held as participants in the “head and hands” murder of Harry R. Miller, re- tired Oincinnati fire captain, to the Pendleton Reformatory today, to be held there pending trial. Capt. Matt Leach of the State po- lice described the trio as “desperate,” in explaining their transfer. The three are John J. Pohlosky, William A. Kuhlman and Frank Gore Williams. Heber L. Hicks, 39, re- cently sentenced to death when con- victed of plotting Miller's murder, im- plicated them in a confession made after his arrest, but repudiated at his trial. — MAN SHOT BY YOUTH IN ROW OVER 20 CENTS| Filling Station Operator, 60, ! SCIENTIST EXPLODE EASTER ISLAND MYTH But Natives Still Support Selves by Selling “13th Century” Idols, He Says. BY the Associated Press. HONOLULU, December 26.—With regard for those who prefer their srcheology mixed with “thrills, Dr. Alfred Metraux, French scientist now here, “regretfully” says myth-ridden Easter Island, off the Chile Coast, no longer is mysterious. But that, he adds, does not prevent its natives from supporting them- selves by selling “thirteenth century” idols made to order. After five months’ residence on the island and a year’s additional research st the Bishop Museum here, Dr. Metraux says Easter is a not unusual volcanic island, where early Polynesian settlers turned to stone carving in adapting themselves to their bleak en- t. Today each visiting ship is met by outrigger canoes packed with foot- high idols, wooden and stone, which are reproductions of the island’s early art, although carved with methods reminiscent of modern factory effi- ciency and haste, the scientist said. This adaptiveness, he said, has de- FREE Stz RCID STOMACH TROUBLES Relioved at Home Quick Resulte—No Rigid Diet 1936 Models Trade-ins— Repossessions— EVERYTHING MUST @0 BEFORE THURSDAY! e o o HNere are some typical itemer GE Refrigerator Originally Soid n- 280 clse it or.
