Bronchial Pneumonia Fatal to Magnate at 70 in New York. R the Assoclated Press. NEW YORK, December 2.—John Ringling, whose name was synon- ymous with the “big top,” sawdust ring and circus spangles frcm coast to coast, died today. The circus magnate succumbed at the age of 70 to a brief iliness of bronchial pneumonia, the last of sev- en brothers whose back-yard play- time show in Baraboo, Wis., grew to become perhaps the Nation's largest entertainment combine. At Ringling’s bedside at his Park avénue home when death came were Mrs. Ida Ringling North, his sister; John Ringling North, a nephew; Dr. Maurice Costello, his physician: Frank Hennessy, a life-long friend, | and his servants. Funeral arrangements were being made today. Owned Florida Real Estate. Ringling’s interests during his last years were not devoted entirely to the show business, for he owned ex- tensive real estate in Florida, railroad stock, and was a collector of art masterpieces. Sarasota, Fla., became the center of his interests. Ringling’s first wife died in 1929, and in December, 1930, he was mar- d | ried to Mrs, Emily Haas Buck, from whom he was divorced. The son of a German-born har- ness maker whose name originally was August Rungeling, John Ringling was born at McGregor, Iowa, but his family moved to Wisconsin when he ‘was a small boy. At the age of five he collected pins for admission to the pefformances he and his brothers gave in their father's backyard. John also played the bass viol in these shows. In the early 70s a wagon show vis- ited Baraboo, bought harness from the Ringling boys' father and depart- ed without paying the bill. After them went four of the boys to col- lect. They joined the show instead. Transportation Genius. John Ringling showed a genius for transportation details, and it was this faculty that enabled him to enlarge and build up the extensive show business that netted him a fortune. The merger of the Ringling Bros.' circus and the Barnum & Bailey | show made famous by the famed | Phineas Barnum took place in 1907. The brothers paid $410,000 for their rival business and soon brought the shows to Madison Square Garden. On New Year day the club will award to a new world champion a medal studded with stones that only a liar could describe as diamonds. Hulett found from the 5500 lies that have arrived at the club office since the first of the year that the ex- treme temperatures of 1936 were the themes of most of the tall, hot and cold stories. As typical of the year's entries from all corners of the world, Hulett offered t of A. P. Moran of Kenosha, Wis. Garrett, in Princess Anne County. varied considerably. .Neighbors, in- cluding his pastor, the Rev. C. J. Bright of Tabernacle Methodist Church and county officials said he was excused 60 years ago from work- ing his share of the county road be- cause he was “too old.” State pension records showed that James' age was given last April as 97, but his application was not signed by the veteran in person. Records at Princess Anne Court House showed that when James obtained his last mar- riage license in 1924 he gave his age as 83. Relatives, however, said a check of the family records convinced them he was born in 1816. Pests Lured to Bait.
