NEW YORK, October 26.—Major copper producing companies today boosted the price of domestic copper Y, of a cent to 10 cents a pound, the highest since March, 1931, The advance reflected quickening demand for the metal owing to the faster pace of industry and was also seen in copper circles as an attempt to bring the domestic price into line with the recent mark-up in foreign copper. The foreign metal last week was pushed up as high as 10.20 cents a pound. This, observers said, followed recent speeding up of the armaments race in Europe as well as heavier de- mand for industrial purposes. ‘The copper restriction committee, in London, today announced that ef- fective November 1 output would be extended to 95 per cent of standard production, from 85 per cent. This was seen in trade circles as an effort to take care of sharper demand. Copper men said that while do- mestic inquiries pending on books would likely be transacted at 9% cents a pound, new business would be done at 10 cents a “pound, effective immediately. ‘The advance in the domestic price was the first since July 20, 1936, when | it was raised to 9.75 cents from 9.50. | A number of leading fabricators | followed the rise in the price of the | Coam domestic metal with increases on | their manufactured lines. Similar ln-\ creases were revealed by Phelps Dodge | Copper Products Co. and others. At the same time trade circles re- ported an exceptionally heavy de- mapd for copper had develsped in | the domessic market following the | advance with indications that ton- nage contracted for will be the largest since July 21 and 22, just after the previous price rise took place. July 21 sales reached the record high of 106,101 tons and the follow- ing day were 25,409 tons.
