PAROLE S DENED INKIDMAP THREA Board Opposes Leniency in Attempt to Abduct Collier Girl. Declaring “the public had no sym- pathy with kidnapers or the writers of kidnap notes,” the District Parole Board today denied a parole to Leon U. Mason, 23-year-old colored student, who is serving a term of from 3 to 6 years at Lorton Reformatory for threatening to kidnap a white girl in 1933. Mason, trapped by special agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, pleaded guilty to violation of the! *“Lindbergh law.” The board pointed out that, with good behavior, his term will expire November 29, 1937, Demanded $5,000. The Negro was employed in the eve- ning at the Collier Inn when he sent to Mrs. Bessie Collier, wife of Maj. L. E. Collier, proprietor, a note de- manding $5.000 under threat of kid- naping 3-year-old June Ellen Collier, grandchild of the couple. P. B. I agents obtained samples of handwriting of all employes of the inn, and Mason's was found to match that in the note. Arrested &nd con- fronted with the evidence against him, he confessed. The Parole Board pointed out that | whereas Mason, in confessing the crime, claimed he had written the note as a joke, he testified before the board that he had written the note “to attract business to the restaurant | 2= getting its name in the papers.” | Masen, at the time of the offense, was attending Miner Normal School. Leniency Opposed. “It would not be in the public in- terest " the Parole Board announced, “to give the impression that the cow- ardly persons who write these notes and cause suffering to innocent per- sons are to be dealt with leniently. Applicant’s sentence of 3 to 6 years is not excessive, in view of the nature of his crime, and he should be re-| quired to serve his sentence.” | The board’s decision was signed by | Wilbur La Roe, jr., chairman; Frank R. Jelleff and Dr. Emmett J. Scott. Mrs. Davis Heads Club. Mrs. James J. Davis, wife of the United States Senator from Penn- eylvania, has been elected president of the newly founded Washington Chapter of the Woman's Welsh Clubs of America, an organization com- posed of American women of Welsh descent. Meetings will be at the home of Senator and Mrs. Davis, 3012 Massachusetts avenue. BY LEO KIERAN, ABOARD THE CHINA CLIPPER, October 20 (by wireless to The Star) — ‘We are soaring into the skies, home- ward bound on this reporters’ around- the-world trip, after taking off from Manila. This immense flying boat lifted its 4,100 pounds from Cavite Harbor just as a faint promise of dawn streaked the sky over the Clip- per’s back. There are 18 persons aboard, 7 being members of the crew and the others press correspondents. I joined the correspondents for the China Clip- per’'s return flight from Manila to San Francisco following a wait of four days in Manila after my arrival from Hong- WASHINGTON, kong. Capt. Dahlstrom lifted the fly- ing boat from the water and at once circled northward to avoid a violent storm which came swelling toward us from the mountains of Southern Luzon. Our plane climbed above the forest- clad ridges until it reached 10,000 feet. Then he leveled off and yoared east- ward toward Guam, 1,600 miles away. ‘We flew clear of the clouds under us, although there was a small blanket 50 to 100 miles in extent overhead hiding the sun and turning the blue Pacific to the dark and angry aspect of the North Atlantic. Today we shall pass another Clipper ship, but probably will not see it. The Philippine Clipper, with 22 aboard, de- parted from Guam at sunrise this morning, bound for Manila. Twelve hours will be needed for our flight to Guam. (Copyright. 1936, by the No-th American In SUPER-SOFT MILDLY MEDICATED Seotics TALCUM fele REGINA OWNERS!
