WARRENTON MAN Attractive Bed Room of Silver Star Home said Mr. Blackwood cheerily. “Since I am myself, I believe, the only per- son extant whom the murderer may wish to murder.” He tossed off his liquor neat and shuddered pleasantly. She started to answer him, but the long-silent telephone at last gave forth its loud alarm. Blackwood reached it in three long steps. “Hello? ¥es—Blackwood speaking! Hello? Is that you, Farson? Good man!” He listened eagerly. The message from Montana was coming in—the lively ingredients of a great tragedy. “I understand,” said Blackwood. “I'm frightfully intelligent, old man. Go right ahead.” He listened for many minutes with- out change of countenance, while the long narrative was unwound. Occa- sionally the narrator paused, evidently to spit. “All right,” said Blackwood at last. “I've got it all, I think. Now spell the names for me, Farson. The first one's Howard, isn't it? Right! Mar- garita Howard. She hung onto her ‘Rita,’ anyway, didn’t she? Then Pen- dergast—Ralston Pendergast? He's the fellow who was murdered. Okay! And Vallance was the murderer? All right, I've got it. Grand work, Far- son! What is it? Yes, shoot the photographs along, but I don't believe I'm going to need them. And listen, Farson—all this is under your hat until T say the word. Righto—and thanks a lot!” ‘The instrument gave forth a single note. “So long,” said Blackwood. He turned to Zelda Lansing. “It all sounds rather crazy, doesn't it?” “Wild,” she admitted. “But it's the last act of the melo- drama—nearly! The party’s ‘on’ at 9 tonight.” His eyes were gleaming he flung an arm out in an extra gant gesture. “A party given by the amateur for the police, with all the suspects present! I'd send it to Tommy Lester, too, but he's in Minneapolis. Dallas and Fen- tress can be reached at their offices, Miss Gray is at the Wyoming, and Rolhe Colbath is in the Renrotin Hoepital. You'll probably find Con- stantine in the directory.” “Is 1t as bad as that?” she asked in a low voice. “I'm afraid it {s,” said Riley Black- wood. “Quite possibly it's worse than anything you're thinking.” She nodded and stepped to the tele- phone. Her last call was for & taxi. “I must go home and dress,” she told him. “I'll call for you at half-past eight,” he promised, smiling. “Wouldn't it be safer, Riley, to give up this party?” “Safer,” he said, “but far less satis- factory.” “And you're still sure—?" “I'm surer now than ever.” She gave him her hand. “I'll be ready at 8:30." Riley Blackwood, in his turn, stepped to the telephone when she had gone away and called up the chief of detectives. “In a moment of exuberance, Dal- || las,” he said, “I have just sent you an invitation to a party. That may strike you as a good idea, but see what you can do to prevent it, will you?” He named the place and hour with great exactnass. “One question, Dallas,” he finished. “Have you ever run down that taxi driver? I mean the one who was driv- ing Percy at his last appearance! I see. No, I haven't found him either —but he’s an interesting figure in this case. One more question, since you are in a good humor. Is the body of the Wingfield woman still unclaimed? That's odd, isn’t it. But I'll tell you why, Dallas—she's an orphan from Montana. Remember, 9 o'clock.” At five minutes before the hour, he reached the place himself, in come pany with Zelda Lansing. “Valerle Wesst,” read the boarde ings, as before, “Exotic Danseuse and Song Sensation.” Miss West, at any rate, was still appearing. There was an early floor show shortly after 9. In the vestibule, Dallas was pacing awkwardly, viewed with suspicion by the man called Eix. His old-fashioned tuxedo fitted him snugly but without distinction, and his face was the face of a bewildered man. His dominating stomach, however, still carried all be- fore it, and the little bulge beneath his armpit was certainly a weapon. He greeted Blackwood with a grin that was half sheepish, half deflant, and glared at Zelda Lansing. “Just got here,” re growled in an- swer to the question, and added in a | lower voice, “What the devil is the real meaning of all this, Blackwood?” (To be continued.)
