Ey the Assoctated Press. NEW YORK, October 2.—Fali trade adopted its full stride this week after some interruption during September, Dun & Bradstreet said today in the weekly review of trade and business. “Favored by cool weather.” the agency sald, “the covering of post- poned needs provided an impelling impetus to retail sales, with the pre- dominating preference for medium and higher-priced lines the outstand- ing feature. “As more orders accelerated whole- sale activity, increasing attention was centered on overcoming further delivery delays. Although automobile production dropped to the year's low, the average rate of industrial opera- tions was undiminished.” Widest gains in retail trade were shown by men’s and women's wear- ing apparel, the review stated, adding that house furnishings, furniture, sta- ple drygoods and groceries contributed heavily to the enlarged total. Blank- ets, sweaters and knit suits meved into prominence, as did men’s top- coats and hats. The average of retail volume for the country as a whole was estimated at 10 to 18 per cent ahead of the same 1935 period and from 5 to 15 per cent greater than in the preceding week in some sections. Increases over 1935 in the major Jand States, 15 to 18 per cent; East, 7 to 16; Middle West, 15 to 20; North- west, 12 to 18; South, 15 to 25; South- west, 10 to 20, and Pacific Coast, 18 to 30. “In alignment with the more rapid turnover of retail stocks,” the report | continued, ~“wholesalers had the largest flow of business in three weeks. buyers were more numerous in the leading markets and mail orders were | heavier.” Washington Produce BUTTER—Range of Drices gathered from wholesale deaier: | nearby shippers based on Philac New York prices): One-pound prinis. ca. 1-pound prints, carton {s-pound prints.’ carton <-pound prints, carton | Spring_turkeys: o u ms. i| St L-S Fran58'50 B - 4| StL-S F bs ‘50 B etfs_ ¥ cuba”CHE Cscorer, 36; tubs 15a18; smoked " compound. brrces. paid shippers. net . i oo ihe PRt ey Biacks “Buienu ot | Agricultural Economics “Market steady at unchanged | prices. DETROIT, October 2.—Cram's Re- ports, Inc., estimated today that au- tomobile production for the current week would total 22,800 ears and trucks, compared with 15,764 last week and 24,770 in the like week of 1935. Ward's Automotive Reports placed the assemblies at 23,175 units, com- pared with its estimate of 20,597 in the preceding week and 29,320 for the comparable week of 1935. LAKES SHIPPING MOUNTS SHARPLY 1936 Ore Volume So Far Ahead of Any Full Year S 930. By the Associated Press. CLEVELAND, Ohio, October 2— With more iron ore carried down the Lakes so far this season than in any full year since 1930, Great Lakes ship- ping is steaming along at boom-time speed. The report of the Lake Superior Iron Ore Association today shows shipments from Upper Lake, ports dur- ing September totaled 7,481,071 tons, an increase of 2,663,457 tons, or 55.29 per cent, over a year ago and the largest month since August, 1930, when 8251699 tons were brought down. ‘The past month claims the record of the largest September since the banner year 1929, when the move- ment came to 9,547,040 tons. This brings shipments so far this season to 33,762,588 tons, 11558376 tons, or 52.05 per cent, over the like period last year and sbout five and a half million tons more than for the entire year of 1935. Recent estimates of total movement of 46,000,000 tons for this season are thus brought close to realization. Ma- rine men believe that the current month will approximate the results of September. Barring too much bad weather, November will not be far behind, as the bulk fleets are sched- uled to operate at op speec Tight through the month. With the Nation « steel mills oper- ating at the highest leveis in six years and production of new-model automobiles getting under way, the demand for ore has been increasing. Loadings of oituminous coal into vesSels at Lake Erie ports continues | at an all-time peak rate For the season to September 27 the Ore and Coal Exchange shows 32,149,621 tons dumped into ships’ holds, a gain of 19 | per cent over the corresponding date last year, with no signs ~f a kt-up apparent. In a little more than a month 20 more bulk freighters have Jecn pressed into service to bring the active fleets to the largest size since 1930. About 265 boats are now plying the ore and coal lanes, 85 more than a year ago. Waslungton Exchange :: : SALES. Potomac Electric 5'2% 112, pfd.—10 at AFTER CALL. Klhcm Benk com.—5 at 290. AUTO FIRMS FACE PRODUGTION RUSH Must Turn Out 1,200,000 Cars in Last Quarter to Meet Forecasts. By the Assoclaled Press. DETROIT, October 1.—The motor- car industry gets the final quarter of 1936 under way facing the task of producing approximately 1,200,000 cars and trucks between now and December 31, if it is to assemble the 4,650,000 units 1its leaders predicted several weeks ago. ‘The industry has had its slack sea- son in the matter of assemblies—while plants were being equipped to turn out new types. There has been little slackening, however, in consumer de- mand, and the result has been that fleld stocks have been virtually cleaned out, presaging a shortage that must mean delivery delays before all the leading assembly units of the industry get into the stride necessary o over- take retail requirements. Center on Used Cars. One direct result of the better clean- up of new car stocks in dealers’ hands is the determination of most of the volume producers and distributors to concentrate, for a time at least, more heavily upon the movement of used cars. The industry campaigned vigor- ously to dispose of old cars accepted in trade during the Spring months and succeeded in relieving what otherwise would have been a difficult situation to handle. The impending drive on the used | car accumulation has its inception in two inescapable facts. The imminence of new models means there will be another wave of used cars flooding toward the dealers when they offer 1937 models, and the stocks on hand must be moved to make room as well as release considerable cash tied up in | the old vehicles. Aside from that situ- ation, however, is the fact that many of the dealers have nothing but used cars to sell. Hope to Avoid Spurts. On the basis of present consumer | demand the virtual certainty that dealer requirements will exceed those | of the final quarter of last year, the | industry should easily run off 1,200,000 | units during the coming three months. There is a disposition at the same time to avoid production spurts, which past | experience has shown the producers | inevitably leads to sharp declines ltun in the season. #x# A—17 QUARTERLYINCOME . DRAFTS CHANGES Plan to Qualify as Mutual Firm Will Be Offered Holders October 29. Sypecial Dispatch to The Siar JERSEY CITY, N. J., October 2.— At a special meeting of the Board of Directors of Quarterly Income Shares, Inc., action was taken to qualify this $44,000,000 investment fund as a mu- tual investment company under the terms of the Federal revenue act of 1936, it was announced today. The act accords to mutual investment com- panies a more favorable tax status than that of so-called “other” com- panies. To ratify this decision, as well as other desirable changes in the charter of Quarterly Income Shares, Inc., a special stockholders’ meeting will be held October 29, 1936. The major changes proposed include: 1. Stockholders shall henceforth have the absolute right to liquidate shares through the fund. 2. A consolidation of 10 of the pres- ently outstanding shares for one new share. This, however, will not affect the total value of holdings, or the pro rata interest of stockholders in the fund, as quarterly dividend and distribution rights per share will thereafter be 10 times as great as at present. 3, It is aiso proposed to authorize the issuance of participating pref« erence stock, or prior preferred stock, or both. It is believed that this will enable the fund under the new law to distribute realized profits in the form of a different class of stock and yet allow it to retain its working assets. Quarterly cash distributions of net income derived from dividends will continue. Quarterly Income Shares now has realized and unrealized profits of over $14,000,000, based on current quota=- tions. This is equivalent to over 50 cents per share, or over $5 per share, when the presently outstanding shares are combined 10 to 1. ‘Holders A Appro\c Gimbel Plan to Clear Up Arrears By tke Associated Press NEW YORK, October 2—Stock- The present year is the second in | which the industry has advanced its | new model work to permit the bulk of | new cars introductions in November | and there ,still are some among the | manufacturers who are not entirely | convinced the policy does not borrow | some activity from the subsequent | early Spring mionths.
