An attendance of 240 at the first Fall meeting of the District Life Un- derwriters’ Association smashed all former September records, according to President Lau- rance H. Riggles. Ten new mem- bers were present | for the first time | and 27 visitors | came from Bal- timore to swell the number at yesterday's luncheon at the © Willard. The occasion was made notable by the reception of a large silver ‘ ;i cup, which was awarded by the 5w national association at the Boston convention to the Washington asso- ciation as the winner of the best membership drive among the associa- tions in this territory. It was also stated that Winthrop G. Batchelder, who was chairman of the membership campaign here last year, had been made vice chairman of the national association’s Membership Committee for the coming year. President Riggles announced that the Baltimore-Washington insurance sales congress will be held in the Capi- tal this year in January, Dwight T. Scott having been appointed chair- man of the general committee on speakers and arrangements. Mrs. L. Cecelia Johnston, who be- came a member of the “quarter million dollar round table” during the past year, was introduced, as was Leopold V. Freudberg, another member of the local association who qualified for the “million dollar round table” sessions at the Boston convention. The guest speaker, Grant Taggart of Wyoming, proved a great drawing card. Having written a total of $14,- 000,000 in insurance policies in 22 years, his remarks carried great weight with his hearers. He considers the service agents render to their communities as of greater value than the money they make in writing the policies. C. & P. Announces Promotions. The Chesapeake & Potomac Tele- phone Co. today announced two im- portant appointments in its official personnel. F. G. Macarow, formerly general traffic manager of the W ashington company, has been made gen- eral personnel manager of the four Chesapeake & Potomac Tele- phone companies, operating in the District of Co- lumbia, Mary- land, Virginia and West Vir- ginia, to have charge of all per- sonnel matters. Mr. Macarow, a graduate of Lehigh University, entered the Bell System with the American Telephone & Telegraph Co. as an engineer in 1920. He became traffic super- visor of the Chesapeake & Poto- mac Telephone Co. at Baltimore in 1928 and later in the same year was made traffic superintendent. He was appointed general traffic man- eger in Washington in 1929. S. F. Merriam, formerly general traffic manager of the Virginia com- pany, succeeds Mr. Macarow as gen- eral traffic manager of the Washing- ton company. He began his telephone career with the Southwestern Bell Telephone Co. at St. Louis in 1913, and in 1925 became an engineer in the operating and engineering depart- ment of the American Telephone & Telegraph Co. at New York City. He came to the Chesapeake & Potomac Telephone Co. at Baltimore in 1929 as division traffic superintendent and was made general traffic manager of the Virginia company in 1931, Bank Raises Dividend Rate. President T. Howard Duckett of the Prince Georges Bank & Trust Co. at Hyattsville, Md, announced today that the directors have in- creased the dividend to 2'2 per cent gemi-annually and placed it on a 5 per cent yearly basis. This bank has recently been paying 3 per cent & year. The stock is listed on the ‘Washington Exchange. Average daily sales of chain drug stores in August, 1936, were, 1.5 per cent higher than in August, 1935, ac- cording to the Bureau of Foreign and Domestic Commerce. The greatest gain was shown by fountain sales, which were 10.2 per cent higher, fol- lowed by “all other” sales, which reg- istered no change from last year, while tobacco sales decreased 4.5 per eent. Carloadings on the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad for the week ended Beptember 26 totaled 53.243, consisting of 35,260 cars loaded on line and 17,- 983 received from connections. This was the best week of the current year and the best week also since the week ended April 25, 1931, when the total was 53,426, Indications are that retail trade in the fifth Federal Reserve district, in- cluding Washington, in September, will show a gain of about 10 per cent sbove September, 1935. According to reports from the Richmond Reserve Bank hotel, restaurant and theater businesses are running well ahead of last year, three good indicators of widespread improvement. Today’s Trading on Exchange. Mergenthaler Linotype stock was especially strong on the Washington Btock xxchl.nge today, 45 shares sell- ing at 473;. This was the best price in quite a long time. Capital Transit sold at 14%, a gain of a full point over the last previous transaction. Two shares of Riggs National Bank eommon came out at 290, up 5 full points, In the bond division two $500 trans- fers in Washington Gas 5s took place at 1241, unchanged, while $1,000 sale in Capital Traction 5s was recorded 8t 90%, up %. Bankers here were much interested in the statement by Prof. O. M. W. Sprague of Harvard and formerly financial adviser to the Treasury, that Uncle Sam “will get most of the gravy,” if there is any, out of the French franc devaluation. The French move tends to bring the currencies of the major powers more into equilibrium and is a favorable omen for world prosperity and international trade. “I do not anticipate any unfavorable re- percussions,” Prof. Sprague said. BY VICTOR EUBANK, 5 Associated Press Financial Writer. | NEW YORK, September 29.—De= mand for amusements, equipments, sugars and specialties today kept the stock market pointed moderately higher. The European currency situation, with its possible repercussions on see curities, was being watched closely, but with more satisfaction than alarm. Domestic industrial progress, at the same time, was seen as the principal price stimulant. The trading pace was slow during the greater part of the session and light profit taking was in evidence throughout. Gains of fractions to a point or so predominated near the final hour.
