HEY may not comprise a trend, but certainly they're becoming a vogue in network entertain- - ment, those audience-particie pation programs. Right now their number is going up. Some one called them “audience participations” because they are just that. Outside of a regular person- ality or two to hold the broadcast together, the bulk of the program material is recruited, sometimes on the spur of the moment, either from the immediate studio audience or the outside. ‘Maybe they're an outgrowth of the influence of amateur microphone per- formers. In fact, most of them have come into being since the amateur night finally progressed from the the- ater into a “new idea” for radio. A couple of examples are the “Voice of the People” and the “community sing” programs. The former uses per- sons who happen to be in a hotel lobby or similar place for the answer- ing of questions, tricky or otherwise. It is not altogether dissimilar from the “man in the street” pick-ups, the “inquiring reporter” of the news- paper. The sing uses the entire studio au- D. C. TUESDAY. SEPTEMBER dience to form a mass chorus for the bulk of the broadcast. Sometimes, too, it goes in for questions and an- swers from the audience as a side line. Another is the “Good Will Court.” In this one, listeners may go before the microphone and seek advice on legal questions despite the fact most anybody. on the other side of the loud speaker can get an earful of their troubles. “Husbands and Wives” also falls into the general category. Here husbands and wives, but not married to each other, discuss such questions as eating crackers in bed and other vexing prob- lems of marital blessedness. Then, getting ready to join the list is one to be called “We, the People,” developed by Phil Lord. It might be described as a “letter to the editor” column brought to life, for listeners are to be invited to come to the studio to discuss any subject that might be of general interest. NNE SEYMOUR will again be starred as the leading lady of “Grand Hotel” when this popular dra- matic series returns to N. B. C. for its fourth year October 4. Lester Tremayne will play opposite Miss Sey- mour. DOROTHY GORDON, who has been on the air for 12 years, will re- turn with a new children’s program which Columbia will broadcast begin- ning October 5. It wijl be called “Children’s Corner.” Songs and sketches will be featured. — Mansion Built in 1680. STUDENT PICKETS STAND IN RAIN 500 Maintain Line as Board Plans to Appeal to State Officials. By the Associated Press. CAMPBELL, Ohio, September 29.— Five hundred students stood in a driz- zling rain on a picket line today as a strike at Memorial High School, in which police employed tear gas bombs, entered its third day. As the students huddled in raincoats and beneath umbrellas, protesting against the transfer of Michael Graban, a favorite instructor, to a grade school, & School Board member said the board would probably appeal to State au. thorities in their efforts to settle the dispute. Principal M. O'Mellan claimed 259 of the school’s 1,000 students reported for classes, but student strike leade:s asserted not more than 150 entered the building. ‘Two secret board sessions last night resulted in a deadlock on reinstate- ment of Graban on the high school faculty. o Supt. A. S. Klinko “refused to re- instate Graban under any condi- tion,” one board member said prie vately after the second meeting broke up at midnight. He sald that he and another board member voted to return the popular instructor to Memorial High, while two others voted to uphold the super- | intendent. A fifth member was ab- sent from both sessions. Mayor John J. Borak said no more tear gas would be used against the students, who yesterday were tempo- rarily dispersed when two bombs sent 15, including four of the team's foot ball players, to doctors for treatment. “If I had know it in time, police would not have used the gas,” the Mayor asserted. Police arrested a fourth person last night on charges of suspicion. Police Chief Frank Cunningham said the strike was led by “outside agitators.” Three were arrested yesterday.
