SEVEN SENTENCED THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, D. C, FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 11, 1936. America Greets German Flyers INESCROW FRAUD; Plead Guilty in Chicago to Conspiracy to Defraud Court Clerks. By the Associated Press. CHICAGO, September 11.—On their pleas of guilty to charges of conspir- acy to defraud clerks of the Superior and Circuit Courts of $50,000 to $100,000 in escrow funds, seven per- sons were given one to five year terms in the penitentiary by Chief Justice Michael L. McKinley in Criminal Court yesterday. The sentence of Miss Margaret Al- lister, 28, who also pleaded guilty, was deferred until Monday. Eleven per- sons were named in the grand jury indictments. Those sentenced were James N. Tilton, 74, disbarred attorney; Ben- jamin Shear, 42, W. P. A. worker; Ernest Eckels, 43, tavern keeper; Clar- ence A. Bales, Tennessee attorney, charged by the State with practicing law without an Illinois license; Rocco Dabicci, 40, W. P. A. worker; Sher- man T. Kimbell, a tax title research worker, and John A. Dicks, 48, for- merly employed in the Circuit Court clerk’s office. ‘The State charged the defendants misrepresented themselves as heirs or claimants to long-pending cases in which escrow funds were involved, and obtained court orders by fraud in order to gain control of the funds. An investigation was precipitated last July when funds the State Su- preme Court awarded to a litigant were found to have been paid out. Arvil Nichols, 43, tavernkeeper and brother-in-law of Miss Allister, and Frederick F. Roberts, former under- taker, pleaded innocence. The plea of Thomas J. Flemming, Bales' as- sistant, was deferred. —————— F Gold Star Mothers to Meet. The National Executive Board of American Gold Star Mothers will meet at the Colonial Hotel at 7:30 p.m. to- morrow. (Copyright. 1936, by the Associated Press.) NURNBERG, Germany, September 11.—The throbbing motors of 400 war planes gave a military background today to Nazi Germany’s anti-Soviet campaign—a leader, in a speech contrasted “the ruthless exploitation of Soviet Russian peasants for the benefit of a clique of Jewish parasites” with what he said were the German Fuehrer's construc- | tive efforts on behalf of German farmers. Welfare Work Lauded. Another departmental leader, Erich Hildenfeldt, painted a bright picture of social welfare work in Germany, particularly in connection with the care of mothers and children. Some persons have sug- gested this might take the form of withdrawal of the German Ambas- sador to Moscow. The war planes, coming from vari- ocus points in Germsny, flew s0 iow they rattled window panes and brought citizens and delegates to streets, windows and housetops. In some quarters, Germany and Italy were linked in the predicted cru- sade toward the establishment of an international bloc opposing Russian governmental practices. ‘The presence of a Fascist delega- tion from Italy at the National So- cialist meeting and the cordial re- ception given the visitors was re- sponsible for the forecast of an al- liance between Berlin and Rome. Particular importance was attached to a statement by Dr. Paul Joseph Goebbels, Hitler's propaganda min- ister, warning “sides must be taken for or against (bolshevism) with full scceptance of the consequences.” Goebbels signalled the possible opening of a crusade against Jewry and bolshevism in a denunciatory speech during a_ convocation of Nazi labor corps recruits. “May the world act before it is too late,” he cried to climax his descrip- tion of bolshevism as “un infernal world pest which must be rooted out.” The dynamic little propaganda minister charged “the Jew created bolshevism and bears it forward.” “Every inner bolshevist struggle is a family fight among Jews,” Goebbels declared. “Bolshevism could be born only in the brains of Jews and he who fraternizes with bolshevism is sure to die from it.” Delegates and visitors in the con- vention city were awakened today by the roar of 50 tri-motored bombing planes flying in formation over the district. The bombers were followed by a large fleet of pursuit planes ently as a foretaste of the flm and aerial scheduled m closing of the party session Y. Additional planes continued to ar- rive until an air armada of xi- mately 400 ships was assem! at airports around Nurnberg. TRUNKS- e = Repatring of Leather Goods G.
