ELECTRICITY HELD BOON T0 WOMEN British Delegate to Power Parley Calls It Great Emancipator. Flectricity is “the greatest emanci- pation force in the history of woman,” 1n the opinion of Miss Caroline Haslett of England, one of the two woman members of the Third World Power Conference now in session here. Miss Haslett's blography contains an imposing list of titles and honors, the mos# significant of which is “di- rector of the Electrical Association for ‘Women, Inc.” This organization, con- « trolled by women rather than electrical firms, seeks to promote the use of elec- trical appliances in the home, simply to relieve housewives and domestic servants from household drudgery. “We are determined that electricity shall be exploited for the service of mankind, rather than for financial reasons,” Miss Haslett declared today. “And the electrical firms have begun to co-operate with us now, though it ‘was a little difficult at first.” Indirectly, the association, which has 8.000 members, is an outgrowth of the fact that Caroline Haslett, as a girl, couldn't learn the domestic arts. Brought up in the country, where laundry and other tedious household tasks were done by women, she Je- veloped a dislike for seeing the same work done over day after day. Unable to adapt herself to the edu- cation prescrived for women, she eventually became an apprentice in an engineering firm, where she made good. Later, as secretary of the Wom- en's Engineering Society in England, she began to realize that electricity should be made to do the domestic work she had rebelled against. In 1925 she ‘“organized” the Elec- frical Association for Women and, as its lone member, set out to interest English housewives in electricity. Several years ago the association, which believes electricity should offer a profession for women, organized a course—partly domestic, partly tech- nical—to equip English women to dem- onstrate electrical domestic appliances and to act as advisers in their use. ‘The association’s latest project is to train house servants in the use of ap- pliances. In recognition of her work through | man Thomas, the association, Miss Haslett received the decoration cf Commander of the Order of the British Empire from the late King George, and was accepted &s a companion member of the Insti- tution of Electrical Engineers.
