SUFPOLK, Va., September 8 (#).— Mrs. Doris Philhower, about 35, lay dying in Lakeview Hospital here today from three bullet wounds inflicted early this morning. “He did it,” she said, pointing to her husband, Jake Philhower, former railway engineer and operator of an automobile service station on Route 58, a mile east of Suffolk, where the - | shooting occurred. Philhower insists “a tall yellow Negro shot through the window,” Sheriff Frank Culpepper of Nanse- mond County, s nephew of Phil- hower, is holding his uncle in custody. An investigation of the shooting is being made by the sheriff and Charles B. Godwin, jr, Commonwealth’s at- torney for Nansemond. Either of the three wounds, it was said at the hospital, might prove fatal. The woman was shot in the chest, the bullet penetrating the body and com- ing out of her back; a second shot entered the body at the left side, near the lower ribs, and a third entered the right thigh and glazed the spinal column, causing paralysis from the waist down. Mrs. Philhower's mother, Mrs. W. H. Hogge, and a sister, Mrs. J. J. Mead- - |ows, both of Portsmouth, were at the bedside. TARGET SHOOTER FIND YOUTH DEAD Pair on Way Home After Shooting on Lake Discover Boy, 12, Bullet in Temple. By ine Associated Press. ANNAPOLIS, Md., September 8.— Two men who had been shooting at & mark 1n the neighborhood found the body of 12-year-old Charles Hutchens, shot once in the right temple, today on his grandfather’s farm on the Defence Highway near here. Anne Arunde! County authorities said the death apparently was accidental. The men who found the lad are John Hundrall and John Chamblitt of Ferndale. They said they had been firing at targets on the shores of the Annapolis Water Works Lake and started up a wooded hill. They reported that they came on the body, propped in a sitting position against & small tree, an undischarged shotgun on the lap. Sheriff Joseph Alton said young Hutchens had been dead about an hour. Relatives said the boy left home early in the day to shoot squirrels. Magistrate Luther Nichols called an inquest for Thursday night and asked Hundrall and Chamblitt to appear. Baile was stricken at the home of Mr. and Mrs. John L. Bennett. He dropped in to see them, was taken ill and died about 11 p.m. The Ben- netts live on the Washington road near here. At the time of his death, Baile was managing a fraternity house at the University of Maryland. He formerly was & merchant here.
