HADLEY. ‘Washington life insurance firms had their inning during July after experi- encing a decline in new business for June, according to the Life Insurance Sales Research Bureau of Hartford, Conn. The Capital’s July sales climbed to $5,333,000 compared with $4,791,000 in June and represented a gain of 15 per cent over the July, 1935, total The national average in July was only 8 per cent above the 1935 month. For the first seven months of this year, Washington policies were 2 per cent above the previous year’s figures compared with a national decline of 8 per cent. For the last 12 months, the total here was 11 per cent above the previous 12 months. Insurance business in nearby States eontinue to show gains over a year ®go, but in some cases the margin has narrowed. In July, Maryland sales reached $6,987,000, or a gain of 1 per cent over July last year, but suffered a setback of 4 per cent in the seven months compared with a year ago. The State's 12 months’ total was 4 per cent below the previous 312 months. Virginia’s July total was 12 per eent above a year ago, while the seven months figure was down 5 per cent and the 12 months figures was 4 per cent down. In West Virginia, the $4,628,000 July sales were 22 per cent above a year ago, the seven months total was down 4 per cent, while volume for the last 12 months equaled that of the previous period. The North Carolina July total of 186,532,000 was 3 per cent above a year ego, the seven months figure was cown 7 per cent, while the 12 months yolume was off 5 per cent. The July total for South Carolina was $2,973,000 or 24 per cent above the 1935 month. The seven months total was 2 per cent lower, but the 12 months figure was 1 per cent above the previous level. ‘The entire South Atlantic area, which also includes Delaware, Georgia and Florida showed a July gain of 8 per cent, but a seven months’ decline of 4 per cent from a year ago. The 42 months’ total was 2 per cent lower. Broderick on A. L. B. Program. J. A. Broderick, one of the governors of the Federal Reserve Board, is to take part in the Nation-wide radid gommencement program sponsored, Beptember 9, by the American Institute of Banking, it is revealed here. His subject will be “Adult Education ia Banking.” Starting in 1933, the institute each year has been given, through the courtesy of the National Broadcasting Co., one-half hour of time and a coast- to-coast hook-up for the purpose of holding simultaneous commencement exercises in all of the 200 odd chapteis In the country. In 1933 the speaker was Newton D. Baker; in 1934, H. T. F. O'Connor delivered the commencement address; last year, the speaker was Dr. Rufus B. Kleinschmid, president of the Uni- wersity of California. Dr. Harold Stonier, national educa- tion director, will introduce Gov. Broderick for this year's exercises at 10:30 p.m., Eastern standard time. Women to Be Insured. Decision has been reached by the Acacia Mutual Life Insurance Co. to tnsure women from the ages of 16 to B0 years. Announcement of this important step in the progress of the company was made today by Willlam Mont- gomery, president of Acacia. “Extension of the benefits of Acacia ooverage to women comes as a direct result of a large and steadily growing volume of requests for such action, and is a natural move in the sound and steady development of the com- pany,” Mr. Montgomery said. Says Europe Is Inferno. The American Banker reports there has been a steady slackening in the cashing of the bonus bonds, Treasury figures reveal. The total amount cashed up to August 15 amounted to $1,176,496,050.
