Waltz, United States Army, who was born in New Market, Va., and served with the War Depart- ment here twice between 1900 and 1910, died yesterday at Fort Sam Houston, in San Antonio, Tex. Col. Waltz was awarded the Silver Star and the Oak Leaf’ Cluster “for gallantry in action” during the Span- ish-American War. He served as chief of staff of the Army of Pacification in Cuba from 1907 to 19089, Col. Waltz was voluntarily retired in 1918 after 40 years’ service. He was appointed to the United States Mili- tary Academy from Virginia in 1874. Surviving are a daughter in San Antonio and a son on duty with the United States Infantry in Columbus, ©Qhio. MARGARET CARLIN IS DEAD AT HOME Miss Margaret Carlin, 21, died today at her home, 1327 Euclid street, after an illness of several months. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas F. Carlin. Miss Carlin, known to her many friends as Peggy, was graduated from Sacred Heart Academy in 1933 and later attended Visitation Convent. She was president of the Delta Chap- ter, Chi Sigma Sorority, and devoted much of her time to this work. Besides her parents, she is survived by two sisters, Eileen T. and Mary C. Carlin. She was the granddaughter of the late Thomas A. Cannon of Wash- ington. Mrs. Cannon also survives. Funeral services will be held at 10 am. Monday at the Shrine of the Sacred Heart. MOUNT RAINIER, Md., August 21. —Willlam H. “Buck” Vanneman, 60, former mayor and civic leader, died suddenly at his home, 3320 Cedar street, yesterday. Mr. Vanneman, sergeant of the guard at the National Museum, was stricken with a heart attack he prepared to take a bath. The Mount Rainier fire rescue squad attempted to revive him. Born in Washington, September 28, 1876, Mr. Vanneman moved to Mount Rainier in 1907. He served succes- sively as town clerk, councilman and mayor, and also was the first chief of the Mount Rainier fire department. He was chairman of the board of local school trustees for 15 years, worked for the additions to the Mount Rainier and Brentwood schools and served- as chairman of the building committees when they were erected. He organized the Third Ward Citi- zens' Association. In recent years he inaugurated an effort to obtain a refund of gasoline | taxes which he held due the town, and was still pushing that project at | the time of his death.
