THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, D. C,.FRIDAY, AUGUST 21, 1936. Secret Operative 48 (AEANTIME , THE LAST OF DAKE'S CREW DISAPPEARS DOWN THE SECRET STAIRWAY-- —By NORMAN MARSH HEH, HEH -- - THEY WILL NOT ONLY BE GASSED BUT ROASTED AS WELL!! THAT'S WHAT THEY GET Winning Contract BY THE FOUR ACES, Inventors of the system that has beaten every other system in existence, HARLES GOREN and Newton | if the hands fitted, even though his Blanchard, two of Philadel-| partner held few high cards. W:th phin's leading players, Were | ..y ying he bid three hearts, an WERE, I'LL GET MY HANDKEQCHIEF' SOAKED M@ WILL THE HANDKERCHIEF | \T wiLL IN THAT OFFICE ---AIR IT OUT SO WE CAN GET FROM THE FUMES 7 KEEP GOING, BOY I'M GOING TO having a set match against & couple of tough opponents. The game had been very even when, with both sides vulnerable, Messrs. Goren and Blanchard were blessed with the following hands: South, dealer. + Both sides vulnerable. Pass, Pass. Pass. 3 Pass. As soon as Mr. Blanchard had been given a raise he saw slam possibilities inferential forcing bid, as the first step in a series of slam invitations. At this point Mr. Goren felt too weak to do anything but sign off at three spades, but when Mr. Blanchard then bid four clubs he perked up & little. ‘While he wasn’t sure that Mr. Blanch- ard held a long club suit, he felt that, since he had previously shown no strength at all, he was justified in revealing his strong club support. After Mr. Goren's raise to five clubs Mr. Blanchard was convinced he could make a slam, and the problem then was in which suit to play the hand. He was sure Mr. Goren did not hold the ace of diamonds, else he would have cue-bid in that suit. Hence the slam would depend upon whether or not he could discard one or two losing hearts from Mr. Goren’s hand on one of his long suits. Mr. Blanchard con- tracted for six clubs, feeling certain that Mr. Goren would take him to six spades if he thought the slam was preferable in that suit. It will be noted that six spades cannot be made, but had Mr. Goren held five spades and four clubs he would have returned to Mr. Blanch- ard’s first suit and the partnership would then have made the slam in spades, (Copyright, 1936.)
