TRADE ADVANGES ARE ENCOURAGING Retail Distribution Broadens Industrial Indices Point Generally Higher. By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, July 24.— Most branches of trade progressed ener- getically this week, aided by broaden- ing retail distribution and active preparations for Fell, according to Dun & Bradstreet. More comfortable shopping weather was reported. “Most of the wholesale markets were crowded with buyers,” the agency stated, “whose orders were more gen- erous than since 1929. As fewer schedules were abbreviated because of the heat, factory operations were widened, with heavy goods divisions the strongest factor in maintenance of the higher Summer level.” Industrial Indices Higher. Industrial indices generally pointed higher, the review said. Electric out- put, bituminous coal production, steel operations and freight carloadings were among others forging ahead. Lumber production expanded 10 per cent. “The return of more normal tem- peratures,” the report declared, “was accompanied by a decided rebound in consumer buying from the rather re- stricted - proportions during the heat wave of the two weeks preceding. Interest was extended tu a wider variety of merchandise, which in- cluded more house furnishings, furni- ture, hardware and groceries. “Stocks of women'’s sportswear, cot- ton dresses and men’s light - weight suits nearly were cleared at some stores. Dry goods received increasing attention as did millinery.” Retail Distribution. The volume of retail distribution for the country as a whole was estimated to have exceeded the same week last year by 12 to 18 per cent. Percentage increases in the more important geo- graphical regions follow: New England, 15 to 20; East, 12 to 17; Middle West, 18 to 22; Northwest, 12 to 15; South, 15 to 18, and Pacific Coast, 18 to 25. The review said orders booked for Fall merchandise ranged from 20 to 35 per cent over the comparative period in 1935. Increased prices or immi- nent upward revisions were partly re- sponsible for the generous covering of furniture, hardware, some textile lines and groceries, the agency said, 24, 1936. MONEY RATES. FINANCI New Wheat Is Produced By Drought CHICAGO, July 24.—The same burning sunshine which brought drought and heat disaster to Spring wheat flelds ripened a strikingly superior grade of wheat elsewhere in the farm belt, the board of trade disclosed today. ‘This wheat, Axel Allman, acting chief grain inspector of Illinois, said. had been coming to the Chi- cago market from Illinois, Towa, Indiana and Nebraska, with heavy shipments received this week from Kansas. “This grain is much superior to any received last year—perhaps for several years,” Allman said. “Under the hot sun it ripened faster and contains more than the usual number of hard, vitreous kernels.” —— 'RECOVERY-RELIEF Outlay by Federal Government Down 10 Per Cent in Last Fiscal Year.
