NEW YORK, July 24.—Responding to a combination of increased pur- chasing power, fair weather and good consumer buying psychology, retail trade for the first half of the current year was the best since 1930, accord- ing to a current survey by the Stand- lard Statistics Co. of New York, Mail order sales were approximately 187 per cent larger than in the previous year, all leading companies reporting the greatest volume for any lar transactions in department stores were 10 per cent ahead of last year, the sharpest gain for any first half since 1923. Specialty and furniture stores scored increases of more than 20 per cent. Variety Store Sales Up. Of further significance was the | strong revival of variety store sales during the final two months of the first half. After an extended period of only nominal gains, sales in May showed a sudden increase of 15 per cent and then rosc 14 per cent in The impro ement, however, may be regarded as temporary and does not reverse the seemingly gen- eral trend of variety chains toward stabilization rather than additional expansion of volume. In May, the stores benefited by the carry-over of post-Easter busi- ness, realization of which was prevented in the final weeks of April This business was improved by larger consumer purchas- ing power and stood out in contrast with the poor volumes realized in 1935, when the month’s trade was re- stricted by cold and rain. The June rise, also in comparison with a fairly poor month, was aided during the last 14 days by the spending of bonus funds, particularly by the almost im- mediate cashing of the “odd amount” checks which accompanied almost all bonds. A return to the only moderate gains realized during the first four | months is now probable. Groceries Sales Off. Among all divisions of the retail | fleld, the chain groceries made the poorest showing for the first half. Sales were only 1 per cent higher | than in 1935, despite the fact that | during the greater portion of the| time retail prices were slightly higher | than a year ago. Excess reserves climbed to $2,990,- 000,000. The increase, the statement showed, | i was occasioned by a retransfer of | , Government funds from Federal m-\ serve banks to commercial institu- tions. These transfers caused a de- | cline of $66,000,000 in Government | cash at Reserve institutions during | the week.
