BY the Associated Press. NEW YORK, July 17.—Although selling of United States Government issues continued in the bond market today, some treasuries met with good demand. In the final hour losses in the more active obligations ran to around 4/32ds, while the 23,s of 1954 were up a little on good volume. The 23s of 1951, the most heavily traded, were unchanged near the finish. Poland 6s were off 4 points or so under uncertainties in banking circles over the meaning of the recent guar- * antee of independence to Austria by Germany. Other foreigns were mixed. ‘The certificates of Wickwire Spencer Steel were in demand, the convertible 7s gaining about a point and the first s running up more than 4. Rails and industrials were irregular with moderate gains and losses about even. NEW YORK COTTON Ly ne Associated Press. NEW YORK, July 17.—Cotton fu- tures opened barely steady, 4 to 7 points decline on generally favorable weather, liquidation and hedge selling. July, 13.25; October, 12.40; Decem- ber, 12.36; January, 12.32; March, 12.32; May, 1231 Overnight selling orders were fair- 1y well taken at opening prices and the marke. stiffened on trade buying and covering. Liquidation continued, however. There was some foreign selling here. The market by the end of the first half hour showed net losses of 7 to 10 points on active positions. Oc- tober eased off to 10.39, but met a little more support at that figure and held fairly steady around 10:30 a.m. There were reports of good rain in the Piedmont section of the Carolinas. Early selling here was believed to in- clude some hedging, presumably against 12-cent loans from spot hold- ings of the producers’ pool. Liver- pool cables reported a small market, with scattered selling absorbed by trade calling and scale-down buying. Except for trade buying on a scale- down, very little support seemed to be developing later in the morning and prices gradually gave way under liquidation, combined with some local and New Orleans selling. At midday October was trading around 12.35 and March, 12.24. The general list showed net declines of 10 to 13 points. Liverpool Quoetations. NEW YORK, July 17.—On Wed- nesday, which so far is the peak-of the week as measured by stock mar- ket averages, 60 separate stocks made new high records for the year, and only 6 made new lows. According to those who keep the scores, that is just about the best showing that has been made in the matter of new peaks since early in April. 1t may be surprising to some peo- ple to learn that it is nothing un- usual for a number of stocks to make new low levels, even in a rampant bull market. Owing to conditions peculiar to themselves or their industries, such stocks are said to be “in a little bear market of their own.” (Copyright. 1436 ) shington Produce BUTTER Range of brices to siores sathered from wholesale dealers (prices to nearby shippers based on Philadeiphia and New York prices): One-pound orints. ton (92 score). 35; 1-pound ‘prints, ton (02 score). 35: 1-pound prints. 180 score). 3 und prints, earton (92 rion’ (80 d_prints. ‘e 3 e score) an LIVE 8 Bigs 00915 912210° mediums. 10a10%: heavies Kian 9157 roughs. The Federal Reserve Board reported last night that member bank reserve balances continued their upward trend during the week ended July 15, an ad- dition of $58,000,000 bringing the fig- ure to about $2,920,000,000 in excess of legal requirements. The Federal Beserve Board this| week announced a 50 per cent increase | in reserve requirements, effective next August 15, which, it estimated, would cut excess reserves to about $1,900,- 000,000 The last week's increase, the con- dition statement of reserve banks dis- closed, was occasioned by a return of $52,000,000 of money in circulation, augmented by an increase of $7,000,000 in monetary gold stocks.
