CONSUMERS' BODY FIGHTS MILK PLAN Opens Drive for 10,000 Pe- titioners Against Pro- posed Agreement. A drive for 10,000 signatures to peti- tions opposing the Maryland-Virginia Milk Producers Association’s move for & District milk marketing agreement was launched today. The Consumers’ Council, in a meet- ing last night, declared war on the proposal which would enforce & uni- form price scale for wholesale dis- tributors here under suthority of a milk administrator for the Capital area. Mrs. John Boyle, jr., chairman of the council, declared the proposed agreement, on which a hearing will be held Monday at the Department of Agriculture, is “a plan by milk dealers to prevent the sale of low-priced milk by driving out of business those who sell it. “The council,” she said, “declares the areement is based upon an un- sound merchandising policy developed | during the last 10 years which can end only in great losses to farmers.” The council's Executive Committee | has been working on the question ever since the Maryland-Virginia organiza- tion filed its petition with the Depart- ment of Agriculture. “Petitions will be circulated through- out the city before and after Monday's hearing, opposing the marketing agree- ment,” said Mrs. Boyle. “We will take thousands of signatures to the hearing. ‘The council is working day and night.” Any effort to raise milk prices will | be resisted strongly, Donald E. Mont- gomery, A. A. A. consumers’ counsel, | said.
