F BANK LOANS GROW IN FIFTH DISTRICT Richmond Bank Reports Gain of $1,709,000 During Month. BY EDWARD C. STONE. Details from the monthly report of the Federai Reserve Bank of Rich- mond, just issued, show that between May 13 and June 10 the 41 reporting banks increased loans by $1,709,000, of which $430,000 was in loans on INANCLIAL, Prev. 1936 Stock and High. Between June 12, 1935, and June 10, 1936, all items except time deposits increased on the statement. Loans on stocks and bonds rose by $1,443,000 during the year, and all other loans rose by $8,933,000, a total increase of $10.376.000. Investments in securities | rose by $9.558.000. and reserve balance | at the Federal Reserve Bank increased by $26,270,000. Cash in vaults totaled | $468,000 m on the 1936 date than a vear earlier. Deposits rose $31,570,- 000 during the year, demand deposits with an increase of $32.457,000 off- | setting a drop of $887,000 in time deposits. Trade Holding Up Well. In the first half of June trade was | fully up to the level of other recent| months, the report adds, and indus- trial activity was sustained at a| higher rate than a year ago. Reports from San Francisco state that more than 600 bankers have al- ready made reservations, three months in advance, for the annual convention of the American Bankers' Association, to be held September 21-24. The large number of early reservations is con- sidered in San Francisco to indicate better and better business conditions all over the country. Washington, no doubt, will send a large delegation to the Fall conclave, as it will be of special interest to financiers here be- cause Robert V. Fleming is the A. B. A.s highest official. Maryland’s State bank commis- sioner, Warren F. Sterling, announces that the Annapolis Savings Institu- tion has made another 25 per cent distribution on the depositors’ guaran- tee fund. This fund was created in 1933 under a voluntary organization plan. In concluding this payment, the bank has paid 50 per cent. Lanston Hits New 1936 Top. Lanston Monotype stock reached a new 1936 top price on the Washington Stock Exchange today when two 10- share lots changed ownership at 841;. The high for the year had been 83. Capital Transit stock was in good demand today, 100 shares, 50 shares and 7 shares selling at 16%;, the high price on the present move which was reached last week. The stock closed with 1614 bid and 17! asked. NEW YORK, July 6.—An increase last month of nearly a billion dollars in the market value of shares listed on the New York Stock Exchange was announced. ‘The exchange reported 1,194 stock issues on July 1 had market value| totaling $50,912,398,322. The total for June 1, with three fewer issues listed, was $49,998,732,557, and for July 1 last year $36,227,069,618. The June upturn reflected the rally in the market following a late Spring decline. Borrowings by member firms against securities increased $18,545402 to $988,543,241. But the ratio of loans to the market value of listed shares was unchanged at 1.94 per cent.
