Rv .ne Associatea Fress. CHICAGO, July 6.—Percy Wilson, managing director of the Chicago Mer- chandise Mart, predicted last night on the eve of the first International House Furnishings Exposition, that orders for a total of $12,000,000 would be placed during the two-week mar- ket period. He said the orders would surpass the all-time record of $9,000,000 set last January. Products of more than 800 manu-| facturers, embracing the allied fields of furniture, floor coverings, lamps, toys, curtains and draperies, and housewares and appliances, will be shown to buyers. The exposition opens tomorrow. The American Furniture Mart will hold its twenty-fifth semi-annual na- tional furniture show in conjunction with the exposition. Both marts esti- mated an attendance of 10,000 buyers. Wilson said the furniture and home | furnishings industries have reported | 30 per cent increases in production in the first half of 1936, with some | manufacturers behind in filling or- ders. “This is due,” he said, “to the home- | building boom, the consummation of thousands of depression-deferred mar- riages, the undoubling of doubled up | families and the flow of the soldiers’ | bonus money.” Washington Produce BUTTER—Range of prices in stores gathered from wholesale dealers iprices to on Philadelphia and One-pound prints. car- 1-ound prints, c: Ve-pound prints.’ carton i+-pound prints, carton tubs (0% score) tubs Yorl 15a17 a2R: fresh (omnn\md TOCK —Pigs.. mediums 10'2a u 812 calves. 5a9; lambs. faid Frices pald shippers net f.o.b. BUILDING MOUNTS SHARPLY INSOUTH Total in 16 States Reaches 6-Year Peak in First Half of 1936. €V tke Associated Press. BALTIMORE, July 6—Industrial expansion setting the pace, construc- tion in the 16 Southern States surged forward during the first six months of this year to a six-year high mark. The Manufacturers’ Record reported | today contracts awarded for building, | engineering and construction jobs in the half-yearly period totaled $423.- | | 355.000, an increase of 80 per cent over | \ last year and 61 per cent over 1934. Only the first half of 1930, when un- usual expansion of pipe-line distribut- |ing systems dominated the construc- | tion field, surpassed this year's mid- | way mark, the publication said. Contract Awards Soar. June contract awards of $67,851,000 likewise set a six-year high record. They compared with awards of $44,- 099,000 for May and with $45,503,000 and $27,263000 for June, 1935 and | 1934, respectively. A 187 per cent gain over the first half of last year gave industrial con- struction the leadership over all other classifications for this year to date. Industrial plant construction totaled $125,486,000, against $43,729,000 Ior | the corresponding period of 1935. The Industrial Journal credited pa- | | per manufacturing plants under way | | and projected, calling for an outlay of | $40,000,000, with leading the way in | | Dixie’s industrial boom. On general | | construction conditions in the South it commented: Cover Wide Range. “The new industrial enterprises and | | expansion programs of established in- | | dustries dot the territory from Mary- land to Texas, and cover a wide range | ! of activities, providing employment for | skilled workmen in practically all lines | of endeavor, turning out products | - | that, when listed, catalog the needs of modern man, and creating a demand | for building materials and plant equip- | ment turned out by factories through- out the Nation. For the South is not only producing heavily, it is buying in | greater volume than ever before.” CURRENCIES NARROW IN LONDON DEALINGS Py the Associated Press. NEW YORK, July 6.—June hard- ! ware sales ran unexpectediy heurr\ than May, and the general morale of the buying public seems not dis- turbed either by politics or by the weather. The recently noted increasing trend | of the hardware store's sales toward “comfort” items—not to say luxuries— has continued and is very notable as to Summer goods, Hardware Age states in its market summary. Many new lines are being sold by the modern hardware store. A par- | ticularly new and rapid mover, dur- ‘ ing this year of revived travel, is luggage, of great variety and attrac- | tiveness. Vacation and camping | equipment, fishing tackle, sports sup- | ‘ plies and beach accessories not only | occupy the show windows and the | feature spots inside the stores, but also loom large in each day’s sales. | Specialized hot-weather offerings in | house furnishings are keeping these departments active in what uced to be their dpilest period. Games and playing cards are particularly featured |in some hardware stores, along with porch furniture, fans, etc.. and are reported as bringing a surprising Sum- mer volume. The drift of expectation as to hard- ware- prices, looking toward the Fall and Winter, is moderately bullish. One by one the lines which have been suffering from manufacturers’ price wars are being straightened out, | and efforts to support announced quotations are receiving better co- operation.
