NEW YORK, June 30.—Just an- | other “routine day in the labora-" tory”—that's all the engineers had to say last night after R. C. A. had put under way the New York City fleld | tests of high definition television. Beyond the assertion that the day's work was just a furthering step into = | the research that has been confined heretofore to Camden, N. By the Associated Press. RICHMOND, June 30.—A jury in Federal Court early today convicted Earl Connor Williams of the Fred- ericksburg Battlefield Memorial Park murder of Fannie Kurz, but added a recommendation of mercy. The jury had been out a little over two hours. By its mercy recommendation the jury prevented capital punishment. Callom B. Jones, Richmond attor- ney, told the jury in the defense’s closing argument there was no evi- dence aside from purported “confes- sions” to show that Williams had any connection with the fatal wounding of Miss Kurz on the night of May 20, 1934. Argued Six Hours, Sterling Hutcheson, United States district attorney, closed for the Gov- ernment after almost six hours of argument. “Even the elimination of the de- fendant's alibi that he was in St. Louls at the time oi the slaying does not mean that Williams is guilty,” Jones declared in the defense’s final argument. “There is no evidence aside from these confessions to substantiate TUESDAY, the Government claim that Williams committed the crime.” Referring to a B. Y. P. U. record book in St. Louis showing Willilams as having attended meetings there in May, 1934, Jones said he did not understand why the Government, if it questioned the reliability of the entries, did not summon some of the others whose names were listed along with Williams to testify in the trial. Cautions Against Sympathy. He challenged the propriety of cca- sidering the alleged confessions of Willlams, whom he described as an “imbecilic boy,” Psychiatrists testified last week that Willlams' mental age was about 9 years and 2 months at the maximum. Hutcherson said since the defense spoke repeatedly of Williams as a “boy” in mental age, the jurors should bear in mind that the average mental age of adults was from 13! to 14 years, according to testimony of ex- perts in the Wililams trial, Phone Me. 4522 for '-n Appointment 734 9th Street N.W.
