By the Assoctated Press. The Department of Agriculture re- ported today that rust had done very little damage to the wheat crop this year due to dry weather. Most of the Winter wheat in Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas and Missouri was harvested with only slight damage from stem rust, the report said. In Northeastern Kansas and North- western Missouri, there is consider- able rust in some late fields of soft red Winter wheat, but the aggregate loss for the two States will be slight. In Southern Nebraska wheat is ma- ture or rapidly ripening and there is little likelihood that rust will be an important factor, the report added. It was reported that a trace of stem rust could be found on Spring wheat in those parts of South Dakota and Minnesota not seriously affected by drought. However, the weather has been dry during the last week and development of the fungus retarded. | There is no indication, the department said, that serious losses from stem rust will occur in the Spring wheat area this year. LONDON, June 30.—The demand *3¢ A—19 WHOLESALE INDEX CONTINUES TORISE Fertilizer Association Finds Average at 77.4, Best Since February. Largely due to a sharp rise in farm product prices, the weekly wholesale | commodity price index compiled by the National Fertilizer Association reg~ istered another advance in the week ended June 27, moving to the highe | est level reached since last Februe ary. The index number in the latest week, based on the 1926-8 average as 100, was 77.4, which compares with 76.9 in the preceding week, 758 & month ago and 75.8 a year ago. Although most of the price changes which took place during the week were upward, increases occurred in only four of the component groups, while one declined and six remained un- changed. The sharpest advance was | registered by the farm products index, | which rose to 73.4 from 71.6; it was | still well below the high point of the year, however, which was reached last February. Continued advances in the prices of all grains, resulting from the drought conditions of the Northwest, | combined with rising prices for cat- | tle, hogs and cotton, were responsible for the increase in the group index; of the 21 series representing prices of farm products included in the index, 12 advanced and only 4 declined, Food prices were mainly higher dure |ing the week, but declines in such | important items as eggs, potatoes and beef resulted in a moderate decline in the group index. A rise in the textile | price index reflected higher quotations for cotton, cotton fabrics and silk; the only item in this group to decline was sisal. Higher prices for hides, i crude rubber and cattle feed resulted |in the index representing prices of miscellaneous commodities continuing | upward. The changes in the other groups were of minor significance. | ‘I C. C.
