H INSURANGE HELD MURDER MOTIVE Robert James Goes on Trial in Drowning of Wife. By the Assoctated Press. LOS ANGELES, June 24.—Before & Jury of 10 men and two women, prose- cutors intent on a death sentence for Robert S. James set out today to prove their contention the red-haired barber murdered the last of his sev- eral wives for insurance money. Two male alternates sat with the Bury to hear the prosecution’s case designed to show James drowned his bride of less than a month last Aug- ust, after she survived the bites of two poisonous snakes. The State determined first to por- tray the setting of the suburban home where Mrs. James’ body was found in a fish pond, and called as the first witness a surveyor, Fred C. Kohl, with maps and diagrams of the grounds and interior. One of the diagrams showed the room where, the State charges, the woman was bound to a table and her bare leg was forced into a box where two rattlesnakes—described by their owner as “good strikers”—lay coiled. After the serpents sank their fangs into her, the prosecution declares, James, fearing the venom would not be fatal, drowned her in a bathtub and tossed her body into the fish pond. e Births Reported.
