CHICAGO, June 24—An order re- quiring a 10 per cent cut in fire in- surance rates in Illinois and thmeat- ening to bar companies which do not comply put Ernest Palmer, State di-| rector of insurance, at swords’ poim.s; today with spokesmen for the risk firms. Palmer’s sudden order charged East- ern companies with “profiteering” the State. claimed, to pass along the savings of # recent years in which fire losses have been reduced. Charles R. Street, Western man- ager of the Great American Insur- ance Co., retorted in a statement after | a meeting of insurance officials that Palmer’s order was a “normal political result” of the fact that fires have been relatively scarce. Palmer estimated Illinois property owners had paid $200,000,000 in pre- miums in the last five years, so that the 10 per cent reduction would amount to 20,000,000 in a comparable period. . The director gave the companies until September 1 to comply, his notice went to all concerns, but, his | statement said Eastern concerns col- | lected $47,420,000 of a total of $54,- 869,000 in premiums paid in 1935, *500 BOX CARS ORDERED FOR SOUTHERN PACIFIC | By the Associated Press. C, NEW RECORD § BY POWER OUTPUT All-Time Peak Reached With Contra-Seasonal Climb in Week. By'the Associatea Press. NEW YORK, June 24—Running far ahead of seasonal expectations, electric power production for the week ended June 20 expanded to the high- est level ever recorded. The_ Associated Press index of elec- tricity output, with 1829-30 taken as 100, advanced to 110.5 from 109.8 in the previous week, and 99.7 a year earlier. The index is adjusted for seasonal and long-term trend. The range of recent years follows: 1936 1935 1934 1933 - 1105 1055 974 919 - 1020 941 919 802 Actual production, as reported by the Edison Electric Institute, amount- ed to 2,005,243,000 kilowatt hours, an increase of 0.8 of 1 per cent from the previous week and 13.0 per cent over the same week last year. Phe pre- vious record output was in the week ended December 21, 1935, when it amounted to 2,002,005,000 kilowatt hours, by Midwestern steel mills, which are | currently running at capacity to dis- pose of orders before new prices go into effect on July 1. portant item consisted of heavy pump- ing operations in certain sections of the Far West, where there has been excessive drouth in recent weeks. All major geographical sections of the country showed increased pro- duction over a year ago. Oklahoma Operators Curb Output. | By the Assoctatea Press. TULSA, Okla,, June 24.—Oil men ac- customed to taking a broad view of the industry weighed controversial indica- tions in the business today and inclined generally to the opinion that every- | | thing was going to be all right. Offsetting the warnings of some au- | thorities that the present trend of huge crude oil production would lead to top-heavy surpluses, with a resultant collapse of the market, there was avail- able today the Bureau of Mines’ esti- mate showing enormous increases in the Nation's consumption capacity. Recommends Increase. The bureaus recommended an in- | crease of 78,900 barrels daily over June to meet an estimated demand of 2, 917,200 barrels daily. July demand was estimated at 9 per cent higher than normal and 12 per cent greater than | “indicated” demand. To help brighten the prospect wu“- the action of the Texas Railroad Com- | | mission in reducing the State’s allow- | able 56,713 barrels daily. The dispo- ‘smon of the operators to guard closely sgainst over-production was shown | further in the recommendation of the | | Oklahoma Allocation Committee, an |ad\ isory body of operators here, that the State Corporation Commissicn fix | | Oklahoma's July allowable at about 5 | per cent under the June figure. Daily Average Down. | NEW YORK, June 24 (#)—Daily | average gross crude oil production in the United States decreased 8,000 bar- | rels in the week ended June 20, totaiing 2,963,400 barrels, the American Petro- | leum Institute’s weekly summary indi- cates. Reports received from refining com- | panies owning 89.7 per cent of the esti: mated daily potential refining capacity, snd which was operated at 79 per| cent of potential, indicate that the in- ' dustry as a whole ran (o still 2,950,000 | | barrels of crude oil daily. The daily | | average for the previous week, based | upoh refineries representing 89.6 per cent of the total capacity and which | |operated at 80.3 per cent of their lcapndtv was 2,975,000 barrels. | ‘ Finisked and unfinished gasoline stocks at refineries, terminals, in transit | and in pipe lines totaled 69214000 barrels as of the end of the week, com- pared with 70,668,000 barrels as of the | end of the previous week. i | DIVIDENDS ANNOUNCED | NEW YORK. By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, June 24—The cur- rent steel situation is highly satis- factory, with production holding at 71 per cent of capacity, Iron Age re- ported today. The longer term outlook, the maga- zine said, is far from encouraging largely because of labor unrest and unionization efforts and “the growing hostility of the Federal Government.” The peak of forward buying at sec- ond-quarter prices is passed, it was said, and heavy consumer buying from a number of sources is admit- tedly prompted by the fear of labor trouble as well as by higher third- quarter prices. In stressing the labor troubles, the periodical pointed out that one major steel plant has been closed by a strike for a full month. Fully half of the steel tonnage booked during June has been prompted by price advances with the result that a large proportion of this month's production has been borrowed from July and August. “The Federal Trade Commission’s report on alleged collusive bidding by steel sheet piling makers and its hasty | | acceptance by the administration for obvicus political purposes indicate quite clearly that the steel industry | has been singled out as the whipping | boy of the political campaign,” it was ! said. “Proposed settlement of the F.| T. C’s case against the tin plate makers,” the magazine added, “with a consent decree will only add fuel to the fire.” Continued automotive activity and | increased railroad purchases are out- | standing factors. Buying of m--] chinery and equipment also remains at an unusually high rate. Heavy spot demand has stimulated the scrap market. The magazine’s | composite price for scrap is unchanged | at $12.75 a gross ton. The pig iron | compilation also is holding at $18.84 a gross ton, as is the composite for fin- | ished steel at 2.097 cents a pound.
