BY FRANKLIN K. MULLIN, Associated Press Stafl Writer. CHICAGO, June 19.—Increasing demand from an expanding soy-bean industry in the United States and for- eign countries has hiked bean- prices about 9 un§ a bushel higher since the first of “June and 13 cents in slightly more than a month. Beans today were the highest in almost two years in Chicago, which has become the principal world mar- ket, because of increased production and the heavy volume of overseas shipment from the Great Lakes port. Soy beans were quoted as high as 193 cents a bushel, compared with 84 to 85 cents the first of June and 80 " | to 83 cents the first of May. European buyers were reported unusually active in the market and requirements of the comparative “infant” domestic in- dustry were increasing. Since the opening of lake nagi- gation, 1,200,000 bushels of beans have been exported. While last year’s crop of 40,000,000 bushels in the United States was by far the largest ever produced, available supplies on farms were not large. The largest producing last year, The rapid development of the in- dustry has been participated in by farmers, grain dealers, transportation | agencies, handlers, scientists and many manufacturers, Farmers received an estimated $30,000,000 from last year's crop, which was ranked as their fourth largest cash crop of the grains. New industrial applicatfons of bean products have apepared frequently. The bulk of the manufacturing was in rubber substitutes, soaps, glues, paints, varnishes and automobile parts.
